Visited March 2024. It's Japan's first public art museum, located in Ueno Park. The museum's focus isn't on a permanent exhibition (which it does have - a calligraphy room and sculptures around the building). Instead, there are different special exhibitions presented throughout the year. For instance, when I went, it was an exhibit on impressionist paintings from the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. So, if you are a tourist trying to plan your day in Tokyo, you should research ahead of time to make sure the current exhibit showing is one you would be interested in seeing, otherwise coming here would be a waste.

I have been here for the Miro exposition, it was really great. The exposition traces the life of Joan Miró through his paintings. I was there for just over an hour. For the first stages of the exhibition, it is forbidden to take photos of the works. There are others exposition, you have to go to the webiste of the museum to see what are the others expositions.

The Joan Miro exhibition is showing from Mar-July 2025. Cost is 2300 yen, but two of the galleries are free of charge (not Miro). Well worth a 2-3hr visit! Also, there’s a special bonus seeing cherry blossoms in Ueno Park!

The entrance is easy to find, and there are lockers for backpacks. Remember to kee ¥100 on you for them. Luggage will not fit. The local exhibition is free, and there are even some artists present for you to talk to about their paintings. The Miro-gallery was a bit dissapointing to me, as his art was not to my liking. Definitely check it out, there is even a gallery for Calligraphy, of course in Japanese Kanji! Definitely worth the visit!
