Kankijicho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, 600-8835, Japan
Wow! Just an overall great experience. Didn’t expect how awesome this place is even I am not a Train enthusiast. You can learn the evolution of Train and lots more. From the start we’re able to get souvenir family photo with Shinkansen (as additional payment). Then we enjoyed soft ice cream inside an old train cabin. If you’re with family with young kids, you’ll need to spend at least half-day and it’ll be worthwhile especially there’s a kids indoor and outdoor play area. Definitely recommended for family trip.
Kyoto Railway Museum is a must-visit for any train enthusiast. They’ve got a great display of old and retired trains. Give yourself at least 2 hours just to look around — and over 4 hours if you’re diving into all the details. A fun and educational one-time visit.
This museum is absolutely a must see for any train enthusiast. The displays of historic Japanese train equipment are so detailed and thorough. The detailed compilation of Japanese railway history ranging from original steam engines to modern high speed rail is fascinating. There are detailed working models explaining the evolution of Japanese train technology. You can easily spend an entire day here soaking up all the information. The only drawback is that the majority of the descriptions are in Japanese so have your translation app ready to be very busy!
I love trains. I love train museums. The Kyoto Railway Museum was one of the best train museums I have ever visited. From seeing a steam train in action on the Roundabout to the well maintained engines and rolling stock to the model train exhibit, everything was wonderful. The staff was welcoming and friendly. They had a special Thomas the Train exhibit when I visited. It was very enjoyable. The Kyoto Railway Museum receives my highest recommendation.

Adults will also find it enjoyable, whether due to the nostalgia, the detailed displays, or the fun atmosphere. Overall, it offers an incredibly fun experience for visitors of all ages.
