If you're in Galle you must visit it at least once and walk around the place. Here are some historically valuable places. It has a different vibe to the outside of Galle. If you're in to that foreign vibe, this is must visit. The building and everything is quite different. If you're planning to eat inside the Fort, you should be willing to pay a lot for everything. There was a fair, it was nice. You can have drinks and explore the place. Must visit it at night as well.

My wife and I visited the historic Galle Dutch Fort last Monday, and it was an experience to remember. Walking through the cobblestone streets of this UNESCO World Heritage site felt like stepping back in time. The well-preserved colonial architecture, vibrant shops, and the blend of cultures made every moment fascinating. We explored several landmarks, including the iconic lighthouse, which offers stunning views of the ocean and the fort walls. The clock tower and the old churches, like the Dutch Reformed Church, were equally captivating. A highlight of our visit was the Maritime Museum, which provided an excellent glimpse into the maritime history of Sri Lanka and the fort's role as a bustling trading hub during colonial times. The exhibits were well-organized and informative, making the visit worthwhile. The atmosphere of the fort is calm and relaxing, perfect for a leisurely walk. The view from the ramparts at sunset was breathtaking. We also enjoyed browsing the local craft shops and stopping for a refreshing drink at one of the quaint cafes inside the fort. Overall, the Galle Dutch Fort is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and anyone looking to experience the charm of Sri Lanka’s colonial past. We left with wonderful memories and a deep appreciation for this remarkable heritage site.

Galle Dutch Fort is an absolute must-visit when in southern Sri Lanka. Steeped in centuries of rich history, the fort is a beautifully preserved remnant of colonial times, originally built by the Portuguese in the 1500s and later expanded by the Dutch. Walking along the walls, exploring the narrow streets, and taking in the ocean views makes for a truly memorable experience. There’s a lot to see — from historic churches and the lighthouse to charming cafes and boutique shops nestled within the fort’s walls. But to truly appreciate the depth of its past, absolutely get a tour guide. A knowledgeable guide brings the history to life, sharing fascinating details and stories that you’d otherwise miss. Go early in the morning, especially if you’re visiting with kids or elders. It gets hot quickly, and most of the walkways are exposed to the sun. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water — you’ll be doing a fair bit of walking. Whether you’re a history buff, a casual explorer, or just looking for beautiful photo opportunities, Galle Fort delivers. It’s one of those places that manages to feel both lively and timeless — a perfect blend of culture, charm, and historical significance. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Sri Lanka.
