Tucked away near the tranquil Arashiyama bamboo forest, Yudofu Sagano is a quiet retreat featuring a beautiful garden. The restaurant offers a light and refreshing tofu set menu for ¥4,400 per person. We were a group of four and were seated immediately, despite not having made reservations on a Monday afternoon. The star of the meal is a boiling pot of silky, delicate tofu that melts in your mouth. The other dishes are either built around tofu or curated to enhance its flavor. The tempura and pudding were also delicious. Overall, it was a unique yet pleasant and healthy dining experience.
This is a peaceful place to enjoy a special Kyoto-style meal away from the crowds. I was very happy to be able to get a table overlooking the garden without a booking. The size of the meal was generous, so it's perfect to enjoy after lots of walking! Service was swift and attentive. The tofu set menu is suitable for pescetarians, but not vegetarians or vegans.
We had lunch at this famous place close to Tenryu-ji Temple and were very lucky to enter with no waiting. The manager asked whether we're OK to have the 'tofu lunch set' as the only option and we said yes since we knew beforehand the specialty of the restaurant. The set costs us ¥ 4,800 / person since we upgraded the rice bowl to the special yuba rice soup bowl ; otherwise the tofu set costs only ¥ 4,400 / person. We recommend the upgrade since the yuba rice was really nice with good texture, natural & subtle soy sweetness and aroma. The hero of the lunch set were many different soy products like yuba and tofu in variety of food preparation methods (soup, fried, dessert, etc). We like the tofu in soup, fried and the sesame tofu ?. As part of the set, we also got soy-based pudding as dessert and vegetarian tempura items. The restaurant is quite big and secluded, so good to have relax meal while enjoying the view of the zen garden outside. Customer services from staff members are excellent and they will try to accommodate your requests. Payment with V/MC cards are allowed in this restaurant, so no need to worry on ?? cash amount in your wallet.
Yudofu Sagano was a memorable experience, recommended by our local friend. We made a reservation in advance and paid in full before our trip—definitely worth it! The restaurant is a bit hidden, tucked away in a serene spot you wouldn’t stumble upon by chance, which adds to its charm. The set menu was generous and satisfying—enough to keep you full for the whole day. The specialty tofu was absolutely amazing: delicate, flavorful, and comforting. The side dishes were also great, though we couldn’t quite finish the vegetable tempura by the end! All of this was enjoyed with a view of a stunning Japanese garden, which made the meal even more special. The service was warm and attentive. A peaceful, authentic Kyoto experience we highly recommend. ?♀️???
