527 Chayacho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0931, Japan
Museum building is very modern and clean; it looks nice. Entrance is cheap. You can't take photos of any of the exhibits (with no explanation as to why), as is par for the course at Japanese museums. Such an arbitrary rule. Exhibits are very dark, and the mood is somber. Whispering only. Feels like I'm at a wake. Buddha statues on the first floor and everything else are scrolls and some broken jars or boxes. Still, the entrance is cheap, the building is nice, and at least the artifacts are okay to view.
This museum is very interesting if you are curious about Japan, they have manny things since the pre ages from Japan and you can learn a lot. I went in a day of a special exposition, I was able to see it an original Hokusai and manny special objects. Was incredible!
Historical museum with so many amazing art works, well organized show, especially on Buddhism books & statues, Japanese different stage’s cultures etc. unfortunately, only this item No 189 is allowed to take photos, otherwise all banned in the museum.
