We had a nice and delicious time at Hobodo Cafe and took some time off from the tourists' paths. Food was excellent and vegan isn't too easy to find, enjoyed our soy coffee latte as well. Thank you!
Visit here, visit here, visit here! If you need more convincing lol this cafe is awesome and I am so happy I listened to the other raving reviews. Hobodo cafe is small and offered one lunch set ¥1300. The others were sold out/crossed out in the menu. The server did offer an English menu but the side dishes were not really detailed at all (as they change) so I have attached below the Japanese menu and used Google translate. Basically all you need to know is, it’s vegan and each and every bite was so tasty and full of flavour. Free water is served in a jug and was topped up when your finished. It was super quiet when we visited and only 1 other person came in but they did seem to be sending out some deliveries to places nearby. I am honestly already planning my next visit if I have time during this trip to Kyoto!
Wonderful vegan lunch cafe with two tables, counter seating and take out. The menu is limited and when we visited in October 2023, it had one sampler plate of veggie curry, crunchy salads , seasonal vegetables, pickled vegetables , spring rolls etc with rice and soup; there’s also coffee , tea, beer and various kinds of rice balls (ohagi) for dessert. The chef trained in France and every sauce and dish has a special different combination of flavors. The atmosphere is casual, with vintage toys and books decorating the narrow space. there is an English menu. The restaurant is a quick walk from Niomon Dori bus stop on Higashiyama Dori . Be sure to check their Instagram page for the monthly calendar and the special closing days when the owners are at a fair or special event.
We did not get to try the sets because it was sold out when we arrived. But we got to try four out of five sweet rice ball desserts, and they were all delicious. It’s just a personal preference that I like sweet rice. Go check them out and read all the manga Books
It is emotionally touching how much thought and craft goes into the food here. A delicious, nutritious, and sane meal in a cozy environment. Beautifully plated goes without saying. I love spots like this. The price point is hard to beat, with my set meal at barely $11. I thus added a warm drink and japanese sweet for dessert. The brown sugar ginger soy milk was impressively good— I even asked for the recipe to try to recreate at home! The chef is super kind, and had a staff member who spoke pretty good English to help translate my recipe-related questions. Be mindful that the restaurant is only open on weekends (Fri-Sun)! So plan accordingly and don’t miss the chance to stop by ?
