I went up to Jiankou from the Shun Tong fish farm center, got lost and it took me almost 2,5 hours to get to the wall. Extremely hard hiking with alot of dangerous slips and falls, dont go alone like i did and bring a guide if your not EXTREMELY experienced hiker. Can really recommend the walk from Jiankou to Mutianyu

Jiankou an incredible untouched piece of the wall beautiful scenery. When we went they had started repairing the southern end of the wall and are making their way up. Took us an hour to reach the wall from the village. Would do it again in a heart beat.

If you only have one chance to go to the Great Wall, choosing Jiankou is the most worthwhile. This is the real Great Wall, and you can truly feel the greatness of ancient civilization. Of course, Jiankou is also the most precarious, and animals cannot climb over in many places. So you must have an experienced tour guide. We chose Great Wall Adventure Club (You can search on Google), and the guide Oliver took us through places where many people were afraid to go. Bravo!

Jiankou is an unrestored section of the Great Wall, it is rugged, wild, and runs across steep mountains, parts of it are crumbling or overgrown with shrubs but it is a beautiful hike. Owing to its remoteness and climbing difficulty, the Jiankou section is deserted with only a few local hikers or a handful of foreign tourists. After a 2hr hike along the wall you will reach the more popular, fully restored, and more touristy Mutianyu section. Due to the poor condition of the wall and to preserve this cultural relic, tourists are not allowed to climb from Jiankou without getting permission from the government. Suggest to book a tour with a guide.

Compared to the touristic great walls, Jiankou is one of the "wild" great walls, and it is the most steep one. Scrambling skills are needed for some parts, and definitely should avoid during rainy and thundering time (slippery and risk of thunder). There are many sections of this wall, we did the section from Jiankou to General's Post (将军守关). From the hotel and return it took us 6 hours (including a lot of breaks to take photos). The best is just to ask the locals about the routes and the difficulty.
