45D Eagle St, Brisbane City QLD 4000, Australia
Whether you’re walking, running or cycling, the Brisbane Riverwalk is one of the best ways to move between two of the city most vibrant precincts. Linking trendy New Farm with the city, the suspended pathway sits above the water and provides a beautiful view across the river to Kangaroo Point and a fresh angle central business district view. The original floating pathway washed away when major flooding struck Brisbane in 2011 but reopened in 2014 with a new design built to withstand a one-in-2000-year flood. The first walk, constructed in 2003, was a well-used route and the replacement thoroughfare proved just as popular. Pedestrians and cyclists coming from New Farm can access the path from Riverview Court. On the central business district side, the walkway ends at the historic Howard Smith Wharves where it connects to the riverside boardwalk, creating an uninterrupted route all the way to the Botanic Gardens. Along the Brisbane Riverwalk the cycling and pedestrian pathways are segregated for safety. An opening span of the pathway allows vessels to access the shoreline where it would otherwise be blocked by the walkway.
The River Walk is a perfect place anytime of day, it’s great for walking with young children’s, dogs, running and for cycling. It’s worth visiting a different times of the day and doing different bits of you are not doing the whole walk. If dog walking, bring water. Views at night, especially in the CBD area are great. Shading is limited, so avoid on very hot and high UV days if possible.
Highly recommended activity in Brisbane, this walk allows you to experience the river and see the city. You can link it with a walk through the Botanic Gardens or across the Story Bridge if you’re keen. Plenty of eating and drinking options in the city streets nearby if you find yourself in need of refreshments.
