Nestled in the serene landscape of Mandaram Nuwara, this waterfall is one of the most breathtaking natural attractions in the region. The trekking path winds through mist-covered mountains, lush greenery, and crystal-clear water streams, creating a truly enchanting experience. The waterfall is accessible at any time of the day, but the ideal time to start your hike is in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the harsh midday sun. The journey to the waterfall takes approximately 30 minutes, with a moderate-level trail suitable for most hikers. Although there is a ticketing office at the entrance, it may not always be staffed, especially in the late evening. When we visited around 5 PM, no officials were present to issue tickets. Upon reaching the waterfall, you’ll be greeted by its stunning cascade of icy cold water. While the scenery is mesmerizing, swimming is not allowed due to the strong currents and low temperatures. Instead, visitors can relax, take in the breathtaking views, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of this hidden gem in Mandaram Nuwara.

Kolapathama Ella is a beautiful and serene waterfall, perfect for a quick escape into nature. Located in Mandaram Nuwara, this spot offers a refreshing break from the city. The hike to the waterfall takes about 15 minutes, and the journey itself is truly worth it. Along the way, you’ll pass through lush greenery and enjoy the calm atmosphere of the Piduruthalagala Reserve. The hike is filled with the beauty of wildflowers, birds, and butterflies, making it an enchanting experience for nature lovers. When you arrive, you’ll find a ticket counter midway where you can leave your bags, as it’s not allowed to take them to the waterfall area due to the water being a natural source. The waterfall itself is stunning, and while you can’t swim directly near the waterfall, there’s a spot near the ticket counter where you can bathe. The water is incredibly clean and ice-cold, which feels incredibly refreshing. On your way to the car park or waterfall path, you’ll have the chance to buy fresh vegetables and fruits from local villagers, adding a nice local touch to the experience. The entire visit is a great way to connect with nature, enjoy a peaceful atmosphere, and support local vendors. I highly recommend visiting Kolapathama Ella – the hike, the views, and the refreshing water make it a memorable experience. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

This is a stunning waterfall. The view supper. The walk from the entrance to the waterfall is not very long. A water bottle is enough. Since this is the start of a water body, the water from the waterfall is pure and drinkable. Please don't take any plastic bag, food when you are going to this place. You have to buy a ticket at the ticket counter on the way to the waterfall. This doesn't have wheelchair access. Do not swim or damage the waterfall.

Probably one of most beautiful places in Sri Lanka. The difficulty of the trekking is moderate. There might be leeches in some places along the way. It’s prohibited to bath in the waterfall as water is used as drinking water by villagers The ticket prices are very low and affordable. Foreigners will have to pay a higher amount than locals.

The walk from the entrance to the waterfall takes around 15–20 minutes and is of moderate difficulty. A bottle of water is enough for the hike, but be cautious of leeches in some parts of the trail. This is the starting point of a clean water body, and the water from the waterfall is incredibly pure and drinkable. It’s prohibited to bathe here, as the water is used by nearby villagers for drinking. Please respect this by not polluting or damaging the area. You need to buy a ticket on the way ticket prices are low and affordable for locals, There is no wheelchair access. I went with friends last week and absolutely loved it. The natural beauty, fresh air, and the sound of falling water made the entire experience peaceful and energizing. Big thanks to the forest officers who work hard to maintain the area’s cleanliness. Highly recommended! Avoid taking plastic, don’t litter, and enjoy a sip of nature’s purest water.
