A historic fortress located on a small hill just south of the Ulhas river at Ghodbunder village in Thane. It is a popular tourist attraction and visited by local tourists. Protected under ASI, this fortress was built by the Portuguese in 1550 and was named as 'Cacabe de Tanna'. It served as a stronghold and trading post for the Portuguese. This fortress was captured by the Marathas in 1737 and occupied by the British in 1818 that served as the East India Company's district headquarters. It has a unique blend of Portuguese & Maratha architectural styles. It is one of the most popular forts in Maharashtra. There are several rectangular rooms that were used as horse stables. One can see the main bastion, the ramparts, arches, water tank, a small garden etc. Also, one can get amazing views of the Vasai creek from the bastion. Near the fortress, one can see a Baobab tree and visit the ruined Islamic styled church of St. John the Baptist. Currently, this fortress is being renovated and preservation is underway. There is no entry fee. Avoid visiting this fort during the summer & monsoon season. This fortress is ideal for families, friends, couples as well as history lovers. It is a must visit and should not be missed.

Amazing experience...The fort is not humongous but still....it's beautiful...the fort is well maintained...the view from the top of the fort is Beautiful ❤️ we can see the city as well as the Creek of Vasai which is right beside the fort It's a great place to visit !!!
