We alighted at Mandapeshwar station on the Gundavali-Andheri West metro railway and walked for about 2 km to reach the actual destination. Though the main cave has the Shiv pindi, the other caves are not so in good condition. The carvings have faded. The prominent wall carving with Mahadev at the centre and Brahma at the top left hand side is somewhat okay.

Truly a hidden gem in mumbai 10-15 min is enough to explore. No parking is available near the cave.

Situated in Borivali West, near Shivajinagar Colony, the Mandapeshwar Caves are ancient rock-cut caves dating back to the 6th century. These small caves are adjacent to the main road and can be easily explored in a 30 minutes visit. They are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The key highlight is the intricate sculpture of Nataraja. Unfortunately many of the original carvings have been damaged by the Portuguese. A carved cross on the left wall stands as a visible reminder of that era of destruction. Visitors can walk through the main shrine, which includes a mandapa (pillared hall) and a garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). Just above the caves are the remains of a 16th-century Portuguese church, which can be reached by a 2 minutes upside walk. A small garden on the left side provides picturous landscape, while the area on the right is still under development. Entry is free. Parking is not available. Drinking water is available. ASI should install a board here with detailed history and information about the sculptures.
