It was one of my most exhilarating experiences in Japan to have climbed to the top of the mountain at night. I recommend coming here in the evening around 7pm. The temple area is closed but the climb to the top is much more peaceful and enjoyable. You will have stretches of the path to yourself at times to just enjoy the beauty of it all. The farther upwards you travel, the less crowded it gets. Even around 10pm, there were lots of people at the beginning of the path but very few once the second circuit starts so try to complete that stretch as it was in my personal experience, the best part of it all.

We visited Fushimi Inari Taisha early in the morning, and it was the best decision we made! Arriving before the crowds meant we were able to take beautiful photos of the iconic red torii gates without tourists in the background. The atmosphere was incredibly peaceful and serene, a completely different vibe from the usual hustle and bustle. While we didn’t hike all the way to the top this time, we enjoyed a relaxing 1.5-hour stroll through the shrine grounds, soaking in the scenery and the spiritual energy of the area. The path was easy to walk and offered just the right amount of quiet beauty. If you’re planning to visit, I highly recommend coming early to fully appreciate the magic of Fushimi Inari. It’s truly one of Kyoto’s must-see spots, even if you don’t do the full hike.

The path is open 24 hours, so take advantage of that!! I came late at night back in July and it was hardly even crowded! Once I got like halfway up the path, there were many stretches where I had the entire path to myself!! The path is exactly as you imagine: you pass through thousands of red Torii gates at a reasonable incline (it's a hike but it's not incredibly steep). It was pretty difficult to complete the path in July, as it was quite hot, but I thought it was worth it. There are some points along the path where you can get great views of the city below too. I also really loved the somewhat eerie ambiance at night, it made for some wonderful pictures! My only complaints about coming at night is that it was hard to see a lot of the greenery, and that the lighting was a bit cold. I think that warmer lighting would have really improved the ambiance of the path at night. So yes, it's worth visiting this attraction in my opinion, but come at night! You'll avoid almost all of the people and have a serene and pleasant hike!

So stunning! Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto is truly a place that proved to be magical in every way beyond my wildest expectations. The thousands of glowing red torii gates form an awe-inspiring walled passage along the mountain that renders you feeling like you are tunnelling through a sacred ambience of another domain. I find the atmosphere so serene yet filling and invigorating, with beautiful forest scenes lining the trails. The shrine itself is so well preserved that one can almost feel the history and spirituality at every turn. One of the best feelings is the climb to the top with the view of the whole city of Kyoto and a sense of achievement. The entire experience was indeed magical and very meaningful! I highly recommend that anyone visiting Kyoto see it — it will be an unforgettable memory! Five-star rating for sure! Very famous and is always full of tourists.

Great hike, at midnight there was plenty of people. Be prepared, if you haven’t hiked in a while it is a bit of a stretch and incline. Vending machines every 5000 steps or so, and steps are wide. Some areas aren’t as lit as other so recommend a flashlight and at least one bottle of water per person. Great resting areas and views.
