If there’s one thing that Korea is known for, it’s their street food. With various goodies such as tteokbokki, pajeon and hotteok, it’s a foodie paradise that we just can’t get enough of. And while we’ve covered some of the major savoury snacks and sweet treats in this roundup, we always have room for one more! Today, that’ll be gilgeori toast also known as Korean street toast.

Far from your average sandwich, gilgeori toast gives you a delicious blend of sweet and savoury flavours with a load of vegetables packed between buttery toasts. It’s a great meal to have for breakfast or even brunch. Can’t wait to take a bite out of this? Then read ahead to see how you can make one yourself with this halal gilgeori toast recipe ?

Ingredients (serves 2)

  • ¼ cup cabbage, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup onion, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup carrot, cut into strips
  • 1 green onion, sliced diagonally
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 5 tbsp butter, room temperature
  • 4 slices of milk bread (you can buy store-bought ones or bake your own with this easy recipe)
  • 3 tsp sugar
  • Ketchup
  • Mayonnaise
  • 2 slices of American cheese (optional)

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine cabbage, onion, carrot, eggs, green onions, salt and pepper and mix them well.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, then add 2 tbsp of butter and coat it evenly on the surface of the pan.
  3. Pour the egg and vegetable mixture in. Try to make it into a square shape and keep it that way while you cook the bottom for about 2 to 3 minutes. Cut the omelette into half before flipping it over and cooking it on the other side for another 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Butter both sides of the bread slices and toast them in the skillet on each side for about 2 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Sprinkle ½ tsp of sugar on a slice of toasted bread, place omelette on top and sprinkle the remaining sugar on it. Then, put cheese (if using), ketchup and mayonnaise (as much as desired) and lay the second slice of toasted bread. Repeat this step with the rest of the ingredients for the second sandwich. Cut them in half, serve and enjoy!

Notes:

  1. For those who are feeling adventurous, try a jam and mayonnaise combo instead. Simply spread strawberry or grape jelly on one side of the toast and make the rest the same as the above.
  2. If you’re a meat lover, go ahead and include grilled chicken, ground beef or even tuna in your sandwich.
  3. You can swap American cheese with other types of cheeses as well such as mozzarella.

All it takes is just one bite out of a gilgeori toast and you’ll soon find yourself retiring from making plain old sandwiches after this ?
