Eco-friendly travel has become much more common (and easier!) within the last few years, including amongst Muslim travellers. Travelling and honouring the world around us are 2 values that are deeply important to Islam, so it makes sense that more Muslim travellers are beginning to be more eco-friendly while we travel! ?

If you've always wanted to go green but don't know where to start - don't worry, because there's no better time to start than right now! Frangipani Bulk is a zero-waste store in LINC KL that's having a major clearance sale of up to 40% off from now until 31 July, which is when their outlet will be closing. If you're planning to stock up, here are 7 eco-friendly products from Frangipani Bulk perfect for the eco-conscious traveller! ?

1. Reusable straws

Let's start with something familiar - reusable straws! One of the earliest eco-friendly products to become popular recently, reusable straws are a super-easy way to cut down on your plastic usage whether you're a fan of bubble teas or iced lattes. ? When I've travelled, a reusable straw has always come in handy for sipping on my drink of the day while I explore the streets of the city I'm in. Frangipani Bulk sells them in stainless steel and bamboo, including bamboo straws wide enough for boba!

P.S. Here are 8 more eco-friendly tips for travelling. You can start preparing now for your next big adventure. ?

2. Reusable cutlery

Similar to reusable straws, reusable cutlery is another easy item you can work into your everyday routine especially while travelling. While we have access to our full kitchen cabinet at home when we're travelling it's nice to have a nice and clean set of cutlery to rely on. Especially when travelling can mean eating takeaway on trains or in our accommodations at night - these chic cutlery pouches will help you feel a little less guilty on the go. ? Right now only the pouches are available on Frangipani Bulk's website so if you want to get the cutlery themselves pop by their physical store for a look!

3. Cotton facial rounds

Skincare becomes super important when we're travelling, be it putting on proper sunscreen or sunblock or ensuring that our skin is clean at the end of a long and tiring day. Most of us have probably stuffed a handful or two of cotton pads into our cosmetics or makeup bags, however, these one-use pads can quickly add up. ? Cotton rounds are a reusable alternative to that!

From my personal experience, your skin may react differently to cotton rounds from different brands, as the cotton rounds can become rougher after extensive use. However, Frangipani Bulk's cotton rounds are made by Marley's Monsters, which uses 100% cotton flannel or bamboo for a soft and reliable swipe every time. ? As they're reusable, you also only need to pack 2-3 of them, which can save space especially for longer trips. As we're not able to travel right now, this is a good time to start working it into your stay-home skin routine too.

4. Organic solid deodorant

By far one of the best eco-conscious changes I've made so far was to switch from using aerosol deodorants to solid deodorants while I'm travelling. Not only do you avoid using aerosols, which are damaging to the environment in various ways, but a huge upside to solid deodorants and bath essentials is that they're carry-on-friendly! ? So even if you're only travelling with a carry-on, you don't have to worry about exceeding any airport safety requirements for liquids, gels, or aerosols.

I will say that it takes time to adjust to a solid, cream or powder deodorant - not just because it's a change from your regular products, but because your skin is adjusting to a new product that doesn't require chemicals to keep you smelling fresh. I recommend using it while you're at home first, as you might smell for a few days while your skin adjusts. But after a while, you'll be back to smelling nice and clean again. (Just in time for your next trip. ?)

5. Solid shampoo & soap

Similar to the solid deodorant, solid shampoo and soap are both carry-on-friendly and are super convenient when travelling light. Nowadays you can find dozens of smaller brands selling their own versions, and Frangipani Bulk offers a variety of soaps too for different skin types. Syrian Ghar Aleppo soap (pictured) is a really popular product suitable for hair and body. It's been made in Syria for centuries using a traditional method, and can help clear up pimples and acne with its antibacterial and anti-fungus properties. ?

As with any other beauty or body products, it may take you some time to find a shampoo or soap bar that suits your skin. Figuring out how much soap to use (compared to 1 easy pump of a soap dispenser) is also tricky, and it may take more than a week for your skin to adjust. I recommend starting with Aleppo soap or looking for ingredients like calendula oil, goat's milk, and honey to keep your skin soft and smooth.

6. Zero-waste toothpaste

Yup it's not just shampoo, soap, and deodorant that comes in solid zero-waste forms - there's zero-waste toothpaste too! Frangipani Bulk's toothpaste comes in 3 flavours: organic neutral, mint, and charcoal. Made without Triclosan or Fluoride, you just need to scrape a little bit onto your toothbrush and brush your teeth like you regularly do. The ingredients are Muslim-friendly, and once the toothpaste is done you can buy a refill or reuse the small tin to store earrings or other small items. ?

7. Menstrual cups & reusable pads

Most women in this region of the world are probably more used to using sanitary pads than tampons. However, having to stuff a week's worth of pads into your luggage can take up so much space especially if you have a heavy flow. ? Menstrual cups have been around for a while but are seeing a resurgence due to the latest rise in eco-consciousness. Personally I've tried one before and it didn't really suit my body but I've also heard from friends that it's even more comfortable than their pads once they got used to it!

This is one item I recommend really trying out at home in a comfortable environment rather than trying it for the first time on a trip. If you're really unsure about using a cup, don't worry because other low-waste menstrual items do exist. Reusable pads are basically washable sanitary pads that come in a range of sizes and designs. I personally have replaced my normal sanitary pads with these, and the only difference is really that I take maybe 5 minutes more in the shower to scrub them out. They're portable and light, and there are even sizes for those with a heavy flow or overnight flows. ?

Switching to a more eco-friendly lifestyle doesn't have to happen all at once or by the next day. It takes time to get used to a change, whether that's in the form of remembering to bring your straw out in your bag, or replacing your shower products with zero-waste alternatives. Just do your best with what you have! ? One day you'll realise that you've built up your own zero-waste travel kit!
