What is Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART)?

Recently, we shared the exciting news of Johor being the first Southeast Asian city to use the Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART). Also known as a railless guided transport system, ART is equipped with various sensor systems that read routes and assist the driver in following the routes on a virtual track. The vehicle can be described as a crossover between a train, a bus and a tram.

Now, Cyberjaya will be the second location in Malaysia to test ART!

The trackless tram will be electrically powered and while it is self-driving, it can also run manually with a driver in charge of the controls. Each tram is made up of three carriages with an estimated passenger capacity of 300 to 500 people and can travel up 70km/h.

According to The Vibes, Datuk Hamid Hussain who is the President of the Sepang Municipal Council, shared that the ART program will begin in January 2022 and undergo a 3-month pilot run. The pilot project is set to move between Persiaran Rimba Permai and Persiaran Bestari in order to test the vehicle's capabilities and demonstrate the use of green technology. That's right! With the future of ART in Cyberjaya, the project may help the city to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2030!

“The three-carriage green vehicle as public transportation suits the council’s vision of low-carbon and smart city concept well, as it offers green mobility,” Hamid shared.
