In the blink of an eye, the year is nearly coming to an end. It feels like just yesterday that we started the year with much anticipation and excitement! ? While many are already thinking about new years’ resolutions, I’m taking things one day at a time (I don’t want to be another year older so soon! ?). I’ve been stuck wondering about what I can do to fully enjoy what’s left of the year, but then it hit me - why not focus on self-care to start the new year right? After all, the year is ending with many festivities lined up. I’m sure it will be great to start off with some pampering from head to toe. So, here are 6 self-care routines I want to try from mindfulness to hair treatments in 2023!

1. Sleeping on time every night

I’m sure we’re all guilty of this - staying up WAY past our bed times. ? I find myself binge-watching my favourite K-drama series (Under the Queen’s Umbrella is in the works right now!) and tossing and turning until I fall asleep. That’s why I’ll be trying to get at least 8 hours of sleep starting tonight! I even read an article online that said proper sleep is crucial to improving the state of your hair and scalp because adequate rest helps your cells repair themselves and produces more enzymes to help your hair grow stronger.

Ways to do it: Limit usage of phones after 9:30PM! That exciting K-drama won’t be joining you in bed tonight but it can accompany you tomorrow on your commute to or from work.

2. Being consistent with eating the right fruits and vegetables

I have my very own basket of vitamins stashed in my bedroom. But some days I’m too tired to take them which renders their effectiveness limited . As someone in my 20s, I’m aware that these vitamins can bring me a multitude of benefits as  I get older. ? Since vitamins may not be enough, I did some research on fruits and vegetables that are good for your hair and scalp! Did you know that bananas, and papayas have been scientifically proven to help with hair growth? Well, neither did I! On top of being an excellent source of potassium, bananas also contain natural oils that help prevent hair breakage and split ends (you can also mash a banana and put it on your scalp as a hair mask!). ? Papayas also do wonders to your hair and scalp by strengthening your hair and getting rid of dandruff. Many use unripe papaya leaves as a hair conditioner to treat dull hair.

Recently, I haven’t been feeling very good about how my skin feels and how oily my scalp is! This affects me so much that I have been very self conscious about taking photos with my family and friends, and to make matters worse, the year end festivities and gatherings are kicking off real soon! Which means more social gatherings and photo taking. ? I need to look AND feel my best from head to toe, so I’ll be enjoying a serving of fruits with my meals because it can help with my skin and my scalp. That’s a win!

Another thing I want to do more before the new year starts is to be more consistent with eating fruits and vegetables. I’ve read articles that say eating a balanced diet will make you feel good, give you shiny nails and even better hair!

Ways to do it:

  • If you have a number of vitamins and supplements to take, getting a pill organiser and sorting them for easy daily consumption will save you time and effort!
  • Have a cup of fruits with your meals or as a snack

3. Going for a hair & scalp treatment

Recently I cut my hair after 5 years of having long hair. My hair was thinning, always too dry or too oily and I was having frequent headaches whenever I tied my hair back. ? While my head does feels a lot lighter these days, something is still lacking and I’m starting to think more care needs to be taken! I’ve been looking into hair & scalp treatment packages but as someone who has never gone for any of these kinds of experiences before, I’ll admit that I am a little hesitant about fully committing to a treatment plan.

Before and after scalp scan: Clogged pores on scalp (left), clean and unclogged pores on scalp (right)

Fortunately, trial treatments exist! Much like the ones from TK TrichoKare that are known for treating hair loss and customised treatment based on your hair and scalp condition. This trial treatment is the best way to help you become more aware of the condition of your hair and scalp so you can take the proper steps to improve and strengthen your hair.

For someone who doesn’t have good sleeping habits, I’m sure this hair and scalp treatment will benefit me a lot! The late night routine of snacking and working overtime causes a lot of stress to my overall wellbeing (my hair and scalp really do suffer the most from my bad decisions. ? I think it’s time to give them some pampering. When the new year comes, I’ll be able to get my head in the game and greet the year with great hair and a healthier scalp! ?

Ways to do it: It’s important to care for your hair and scalp no matter how busy you are. That’s why TrichoKare’s treatment is something you should try! The Advanced Scalp Detox & Care Treatment is only $40 NETT  and you’ll get a FREE HairGRO Ampoule, Hair Bath and Protein Hydramist (worth $770!).

4. Attend cardio classes

It’s hard to get many steps in when you have a sedentary job like myself. ? Something that I’ve recently started doing as a form of self-care and exercise is attending Zumba classes! Of course, I’m not immune to the 4PM sluggish feeling that makes me want to cancel all post-work events and just stay in for the evening. However, I found that going for these cardio classes gives me a much needed serotonin boost! Just by moving and getting your heart rate up for a few minutes can make a big difference in improving your mood.

My goal for the new year is to get fitter! It’s hard to maintain a healthy weight when year end festivities always center around food. ? Snacking and binge eating at work also adds to my list of concerns and habits I need to kick before the new year. So by getting more active, not only am I able to keep my fitness levels high, my body will feel good too. Overall wellness is very important and we have to make sure that we’re always working on improving our image and health altogether!

P.S. Did you know that regular exercise can help promote hair growth? Exercise increases blood flow and circulation throughout the body. That means that there are more nutrients and oxygen reaching the scalp!

Ways to do it: Sign up for a class with a friend (the more the merrier!) so you’ll feel motivated to attend the sessions! There are many budget-friendly options you can choose from - why not check out your nearest community centre for some Zumba or K-pop fitness classes?

5. Cleaning my room once a week

I’m the kind of person who starts my Mondays with a clean dresser and wardrobe but once Friday hits, suddenly everything is disorganised once more (but I like to call it an organised mess)! I’ve kept it a habit to never work where I sleep, which is made easy with the study room in my home but that’s where the problem is. On days when I’m working from home, I spend 80% of my time in the study room so I tend to neglect the state of my bedroom since I only use it for sleeping. Oh, did I mention I have three cats (they bring tissues and papers onto my bed and desk!)? ? Which means that if I’m not the one making a mess in my room, it’s my cats. Cleaning once a week is a form of maintenance and when the new year comes around, I won’t have to worry about excessive cleaning that’s due!

Ways to do it: Discipline is very important when it comes to cleanliness! Studies have shown that a clean and organised environment can help increase productivity and improve your mood too. ?
