There’s more to Japan than just the cherry blossoms in spring and fresh seafood! If you’re visiting Tokyo, you don’t have to hurry back to your hotel to do your prayer obligations. There are many beautiful mosques in the city that you can visit for prayers as well as to appreciate the architectural designs and structures you might not get to see back home. ?So, we’ve compiled a list of mosques in Tokyo for you to visit to sightsee at while you get your prayers done!

1. Asakusa Mosque

Also known as Darul Arqam Mosque, Asakusa Mosque is located in the heart of Asakusa and is one of the more popular mosques in the Tokyo because of its accessibility and proximity to other attractions. One such attraction would be the Asakusa Temple which happens to be in walking distance of the mosque. ? This four-storied mosque, including the library on the ground floor, serves as a Muslim community centre. The facility was established in 1998 as a part of the mosque construction project conducted by the Islamic Circle of Japan, a well-known Islamic organization.

2. Assalam Okachimachi Mosque

Assalam Okachimachi Mosque is also known as Ueno Okachimachi Mosque! It’s very conveniently located nearby Ueno Station (it's only about a 10-minute walk!). This facility is managed by the As-Salaam Foundation, a Muslim community centre in Japan. On the outside, you wouldn’t be able to tell that it’s a mosque with its hole-in-the-wall concept! ? This building is used for two different purposes. There is a community centre on the first floor where local Muslims gather for weekly gatherings and activities. Muslims and visitors use the upper level as a prayer hall.

P.S. There’s even a library and study room with a whole collection of Islamic books!

3. Otsuka Mosque

Otsuka Mosque was established to accommodate Muslim community members living in central Tokyo and is operated by the Japan Islamic Trust. ? It’s a very peaceful space to pray and you might even come across other travellers visiting! On top of being a great place for travellers to stop by, you can also find halal food in the area.

4. Hiroo Mosque

Minato ward is home to Hiroo Mosque, or the Arabic Islamic Institute in Tokyo. One of Tokyo's most international districts is home to the mosque, housed within the Arabic Islamic Institute. Hiroo Mosque is more than just a religious establishment; it is a center for Arabic culture as well. This center provides a prayer hall as well as an opportunity to learn about Arabic culture in Tokyo. They operate a school of Arabic culture and language within the same building as one of their activities! ?

5. Tokyo Camii Mosque

The Tokyo Camii Mosque is one of Tokyo's largest and oldest mosques! It was first built by the Turkish community who emigrated from Russia in 1938. It was demolished in 1986 and rebuilt in 2000 after being severely damaged during construction. Today, the mosque is considered to be the most beautiful mosque in all of Japan with its high chandelier and brightly lit prayer halls! ? Besides praying, this mosque has a cultural center, an Islamic library, Turkish food and Turkish souvenirs for sale. They also conduct a program to introduce Islam to Non-Muslims every week!

6. Makki Mosque

The Makki Mosque is often referred to as Ohanajaya Mosque because its located nearby Ohanajaya Station. The Masjid that was established in 2001 and offers a variety of activities to the Muslim community. The classes include lectures about Islam, teaching Qur'an to the kids, Taraweeh prayer during Ramadhan, and consultations regarding Islam!

7. Al-Tawheed Mosque

Located west of Tokyo, Al-Tawheed Masjid (also known as Hachioji Mosque) is not exactly the city's centre but is a popular mosque travellers often visited especially if they’re in the area for nature. That’s because the mosque is only 10-kilometres away from Mount Takao - a popular destination for fans of trekking and hiking! ? The Masjid also has their own library and classroom to conduct classes and lectures.

8. Kamata Mosque

Kamata Mosque is located in Tokyo but is near to Osaka as well! Located near JR Kamata Station, the masjid consists of three floors. The first floor is reserved for males, second floor is for women. The location makes it very convenient to cycle or simply walk over to the mosque.

9. Akabane Mosque

The Akabane Mosque is located on the third floor of a shophouse which sells international snacks and groceries! While the mosque is quite small, the location makes it convenient for a traveller to drop by for a quick prayer and grab a snack afterwards.
