There was a long queue for tickets before starting the hike to Lion’s Rock, so I recommend buying or booking tickets in advance to save time. The hike itself takes around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace. It can be a bit challenging, but the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, especially at sunrise. Along the way, you’ll also come across some beautiful ancient rock paintings, which are definitely worth seeing. The place can get hot, so make sure to carry enough water to stay hydrated.

While very touristic, it's still awe inspiring to see in real life. It's stunning when you catch your first good glimpse of this natural citadel. The nice stair exercise to ascend to the top was worth the climb as the views were spectacular. We came during sunset and were so grateful for the cooler weather and dwindled crowds. If the sun would stay up a little longer we would have loved to stay and linger, enjoy the views, and take it in slowly. Alas, I wouldn't recommend trying to get down when it's dark. It costs $35 USD per foreign visitor. Foreigners with cars need to park in the foreigner car park (you can google it) where you'll be greeted by tour guides. You buy your own tickets at the museum there, then start your way to the top. Going for sunset is nice, just don't go during midday. It'll be way too hot. Bring water and prepare yourself mentally for many stairs.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress is one of the most iconic and historically significant places in Sri Lanka. I recently visited and it was an amazing experience! It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and truly a masterpiece of ancient urban planning. There’s a proper stairway from bottom to top, so there’s no need for actual climbing. The walk up is a bit tiring, but totally manageable and worth every step. On the way, you can see the famous Mirror Wall, ancient frescoes, beautiful water gardens, and of course, the massive lion’s paws at the entrance to the summit. King Kashyapa (AD 477–495) chose this location for his new capital and built a magnificent palace on top of the rock. The name “Sigiriya” comes from Sinhagiri, meaning Lion Rock, inspired by the lion-shaped gateway halfway up. After King Kashyapa’s death, the site was abandoned as a capital and later used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. If you’re visiting Sri Lanka, don’t miss Sigiriya. The history, architecture, and natural beauty all come together to create a truly unforgettable experience. Highly recommended!

Sigiriya Lion Rock – A Majestic Journey Through History Visiting Sigiriya Lion Rock is like stepping into a legendary chapter of Sri Lanka’s past. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is one of the most iconic and breathtaking landmarks in the country. Sigiriya was once the royal citadel of King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD). According to the legend, Kashyapa seized the throne after overthrowing and murdering his father, King Dhatusena. Fearing retaliation from his half-brother Moggallana—the rightful heir—Kashyapa moved the capital from Anuradhapura to the more secure Sigiriya and built a fortress on top of the massive rock, rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains. The climb to the top is an unforgettable experience. Along the way, you’ll see the famous Sigiriya frescoes, painted over 1,500 years ago, believed to depict celestial maidens. Just past the frescoes is the Mirror Wall, which still holds ancient graffiti written by visitors from over a thousand years ago. One of the most impressive features is the Lion’s Gate, where two enormous lion paws guard the final ascent to the summit—once a complete lion-shaped entrance, symbolizing power and protection. At the top, you’ll find the ruins of the royal palace, water gardens, and panoramic views that make the entire climb worthwhile. It’s a perfect blend of history, architecture, art, and natural beauty. Whether you’re a history lover, an adventurer, or just a curious traveler, Sigiriya is an absolute must-see. It’s not just a rock—it’s a story carved into stone, standing tall for over a millennium.

Sigiriya is a UNESCO world heritage site in Sri Lanka. It’s an ancient kingdom. It’s an amazing rock structure of 200m height. For locals we’ve to walk around 800m from the vehicle park to the ticket counter. It takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour to climb the top. This is open daily from 5.30 am to 5 pm. The best time to go there is the early morning. You can capture the sunset by the rock very beautifully.
