The best place for art lovers in India. Spent only 4 hours, 40 would have been ideal. Can't wait to visit again. The best thing is that you might fall in love with artworks of artist/s whom you meet for the first time in the gallery. There is a souvenir shop where you can buy prints and books on artworks of legendary artists. I bought a book on the works of Upendra Maharathi and two prints of art.

The gallery is a very beautiful place to see modern art and the work of summer famous Indian artists.
It also has a temporary exhibition from Amrita Sher Gill.
The main and permanent exhibition is 4 floors and the temporary exhibition is setup in the Jupiter house which is just across the main hall.
Another point is they don't allow taking photos or videos inside the gallery...
Although the ticket is only 20Rs., they don't really provide a map or any direction for inside the Gallery.
Apart from that the place is really well maintained and also has a boutique where you can buy some art replicas and accessories.  It is also wheelchair accessible and has a few gardens to sit around in the evening.

It's a great place for spending quality time with friends and family. My personal favorite is 3rd floor where "tagore" supremacy you will observe soon you enter the hall! Inside the gallery Photography is not allowed though.

As an architect, visiting the National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi, was truly fulfilling. The entire complex is thoughtfully designed — it blends aesthetic architecture with sensitive landscape planning, creating a calm and immersive experience. The original building follows the Lutyens’ style, with grand proportions, solid forms, and colonial charm, while the newer extensions embrace modern spatial planning, including contours, ramps, and buffer zones that enhance circulation and light play.

I really appreciated how the galleries are connected through naturally lit corridors, with buffer spaces and transitions that never feel abrupt. The use of contour in the design — especially in the newer galleries — adds spatial drama without overwhelming the art itself. It’s a space where architecture respectfully complements the artwork.

You can easily spend 2–3 hours here and still want to come back. I was honestly awestruck to witness original Raja Ravi Varma paintings alongside works by M.F. Husain, Amrita Sher-Gil, and stunning miniature to abstract art. Every section surprises you.

The museum doesn’t just house art; it’s a well-orchestrated architectural experience. Highly recommend it to anyone with even the slightest interest in space, light, or design — and of course, modern Indian art.
