Best Halal Authentic Cuisine

Authenticity

1. So Pho (Vietnamese)

Craving for a hot bowl of yummy, comfort food goodness? Head down to So Pho, a halal Vietnamese chain restaurant that serves all kind of traditional Vietnamese dishes ranging from Pho soup noodles and rice-paper wraps to rice bowls and traditional Banh Mi sandwiches. To make ordering more convenient, the restaurant provides order sheets at each table. Customers can take their time to decide what they want before filling up the order sheet.

The star dish would definitely be the pho, a type of Vietnamese noodle soup typically made from beef stock. Springy noodles with light and flavourful broth, you'd definitely want to try this if you're looking for something light! A pretty un-pho-gettable meal to be quite honest!

You also have the option of choosing the meat - either beef or chicken. If you’re up for some bite-sized appetisers, we’d recommend the flavourful rice wraps or crispy, fried spring rolls! For a lighter meal, you might want to opt for the banh mi - a Vietnamese snack consisting of a baguette typically filled with meat, pickled vegetables, and chilli sauce.

2. Yi Zun Noodle (Chinese Hand-pulled Beef Noodles)

Established by a Chinese-Muslim couple from China, you know it doesn’t get any more authentic than this. Tucked along the streets of Farrer Park, this humble store is a local gem that's been popular ever since they started.

Serving their special of either beef or chicken noodle, it’s best to come down on an empty stomach as they’re generous with their serving size. You’ll be able to see the noodles being pulled right in the store through a small window, making your appetite grow as you wait for your steaming hot bowl of soup to arrive.

Halal Status: Muslim-owned

3. Afterwit (Mexican/Asian Fusion)

Afterwit is a quaint little café along North Bridge Road that everyone’s been taco-ing about! (Pun intended)  Serving up a variety of unique tacos, cheesy quesadillas and ever so filling burritos, this café is a must visit! What’s really interesting about Afterwit is that they infuse local flavors into classic Mexican cuisine. Some flavors include the Butter Chicken Burrito, Peking Duck Tacos, and Lamb Briyani Burrito! Though a little on the pricey side, the rich and unique flavours totally make up for it.

If you're looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth, they have their own House Churros too!  Warning, you might suffer from a food coma after eating here (we definitely did!).

Halal Status: Muslim-owned

4. Maki-San (Japanese Sushi)

Maki-your-own-sushi right here at Maki-San. If you're a picky eater and need your meal to be personalised to the very last detail, this is the place for you. Plus, it's super affordable! Start by choosing which wrap you'd like your maki in - traditional nori (seaweed), crepe (egg wrap) or healthy soy wrap. Next, choose your carbs. For the health-conscious, they offer brown rice option as well! Then, take your pick of ingredients, sprinkles and sauces to complete your maki! Ever walked by Astons and caught a tantalizing whiff of their succulent, juicy meats but sighed in disappointment at the lack of halal certification? Head on over to Andes, the halal counterpart to this favourite local franchise! Char-grilled steaks and chicken, sinful mac 'n' cheese, baked potatoes, creamy coleslaw... you name it, they have it! Everything you want in a Western meal all on one plate, at affordable prices.

#HHWT Tip: Order your steak in medium rare for maximum juiciness!

6. Ichikokudo (Japanese Ramen)

Ichikokudo opened their doors in 2018 and have been dazzling us with their rich Hokkaido-style ramen broth ever since. Using kelp, wheat, and butter from Hokkaido, their ramen and rice bowls are full of rich flavours that will flood your mouth with pure deliciousness at every bite.

Seafood lovers will definitely have to try their Ichi-Ramen Gifts From The Sea bowl, which is topped with crab leg, shrimp, and scallops for a hearty meal to remind you of the seashore. The Hokkai Seafood line also uses a salt-based stock that brings out the taste of seafood including Hokkai Clams, Hokkai Scallops, and Hokkai Prawns. If you’re not a fan of especially thick broths, opt for their Light Rich Ichikokudo Ramen that has a lighter and cleaner taste on the palate, or their rice bowls that are just as delicious!

8. Delibowl (Chinese Sichuan)

It's no secret that we love Chinese food, but it's not always easy to find authentic AND halal ones in Singapore. Thankfully, there's been a wave of eateries serving halal Chinese dishes which are prepared the same way as those back in China! Specialising in Sichuan dishes, Delibowl lets you savour traditional Chinese food in a fast-food concept. The menu might seem simple with a few add-on side dishes but it's enough to fill your tummy. Their set meals include a side dish and soup, so it's pretty value-for-money!

10. Hjh Maimunah Restaurant (Malay/Indonesian)

Serving a wide array of scrumptious kampung styled traditional Malay and Indonesian dishes, Hjh (pronounced 'Hajah') Maimunah Restaurant is a cult favourite amongst the locals! It's even won a prestigious Bib Gourmand rating in the Michelin Guide Singapore 2019! Standout dishes include Beef Rendang (braised beef), Sambal Belachan (chilli and shrimp paste), Ayam Bakar Padang (grilled chicken), Tahu Telor (deep-fried beancurd) and Ikan Bakar (grilled fish).

If you somehow still have room in your belly for dessert, the restaurant also serves traditional desserts and snacks such as Epok-Epok (curry puff), Kueh Lapis (layered cake) and Ondeh Ondeh (a Pandan dessert filled with palm sugar). Perfect for a quick snack!

11. Tang Tea House (Chinese Zi Char)

Now, you may see Chinese food all around the island but very few of them are halal-certified. Among the halal-certified Chinese eateries, the best place to try Zi Char (a term used by locals to describe home-style and comfort dishes) would be Tang Tea House! With several outlets island-wide, the rustic restaurant serves halal dim sum and other authentic Chinese local dishes. Best of all, the outlets all open till late - perfect supper spot!

We highly recommend trying the fried bee hoon (stir-fried rice vermicelli), hor fun (flat rice noodle) and everyone’s favourite – chicken rice! Another popular dish is the sinful but utterly delicious Pan Fried Crispy Bee Hoon. Craving for these yummy dishes yet? Check out their menu to get a better feel of what they serve!

12. Zam Zam (Indian Muslim)

Home to the most popular murtabak in Singapore, the century-old Zam Zam restaurant is conveniently located at North Bridge Road. When ordering murtabak, you can choose between mutton, beef, chicken and even deer! Though all options sound very appealing, we’d recommend their mutton variation. Served with an extra layer of fried plain prata at the bottom and an egg with minced mutton on top, this dish is worth every. Single. Calorie.

If mutton isn’t your calling, try their chicken murtabak instead! With tender chunks of masala chicken wrapped in a fluffy egg prata, it’s a good alternative to its red meat brothers.

Aside from murtabak, Zam Zam also serves other dishes such as Roti Prata, Mee Goreng, Biryani, Fish Curry and more!
