Why book?

Staying in a boutique hotel is a unique way to get to know a city. Boutique hotels have character, personal touch and beautiful detailing. If you ever need a romantic staycation with your loved one — to celebrate an anniversary or for your honeymoon, look no further than The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel! From the colonial-style design to great customer service, there is nothing understated here.

Location, location, location

Located in the bustling heart of old Kuala Lumpur, The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel is actually the first boutique property of Ormond Group. Situated in Jalan Sultan Ismail, it's within walking distance of shopping malls and tourist attractions in the Golden Triangle, making it the perfect city staycation for locals and tou1rists alike. There are plenty of Muslim-friendly eateries here too (hello, Nasi Kandar Kudu!) so you don't have to worry about getting hungry!

Insta-worthy stay

With an old meets new concept, this new boutique hotel will take you back in time with its architecture and locally-sourced materials showcased throughout the hotel. Do you know what they say about love at first sight? That’s certainly how we felt when we stepped into the lobby! It’s beautifully decorated with earthy-toned furniture of rattan lounge chairs, comfy sofas and layered rugs. Geometric-shaped lighting fixtures complete the old meets modern look. It’s certainly one for the ‘gram!

Food and drinks

On the same floor, you’ll find The Chow Kit Kitchen and Bar. The restaurant is the heart and soul of any hotel, and it’s the same here too. While there are plenty of dining options around the area, the restaurant offers a twist to classic Malaysian dishes with creations such as ayam kampung emas (crispy kampung chicken, served with signature house-made sambal hijau and sambal merah), The Chow Kit fish and chips (tandoori marinated fish, served with crispy kale, hand-cut chips and tartare sauce) and musang king custard (baked cream custard with fresh musang king, caramelised with brown sugar). The local dishes are given a twist — the good kind, we may add!

We had the loveliest experience dining here. For dinner, we ordered the daging masak hitam (beef cooked in soy sauce and fried herbs), sambal terung (eggplant in sambal) and begedil sumbat (tofu stuffed with potato patty). The service staff were attentive despite the rush hour crowd and the food is delicious. The portions are quite huge too, so we recommend sharing!

We also recommend grabbing breakfast here before you leave for the day. The breakfast menu offers nasi lemak, avocado toast, yoghurt and fruits, French toast and a big breakfast consisting of sunny-side-up eggs, sausages, baked beans and sourdough toasts. While the prices may be a bit on the pricy side, you'll find other cafes in Kuala Lumpur are also offering the same prices.

Do note that while the restaurant may not have a halal certificate, no pork and alcohol are used in their dishes. We recommend you dine at your own discretion.

The room

With 113 classic-themed guest rooms, a reflection of the layered history and culture of Kuala Lumpur can be seen in its thoughtful design. Each room exudes class and elegance while remaining cosy and peaceful, making you feel right at home. During our stay, we were lucky to stay in the Towkay Soh Suite which features a plush king-sized bed and a lounge area overlooking the bustling city. We could even watch the MRT passes by!

We loved how comfy the king-sized bed is. It's certainly comfy enough for two people to sleep in. Combined with the plush pillows and cosy comforter, hello Dreamland! The bathroom is spacious too, with dark natural stone walls and brass accents peppering the space, it made us feel like we were in a fancy cave. However, the bathroom did not come with a bidet so as a true-blood Asian, it is a bit uncomfortable for us. Luckily there is a shower hose, so all crises are averted.

Decorated in rich colours of velvet green and deep mahogany, the room is finished with brass accents. We love it when hotels take a bold design choice! Apart from that, the room comes with a flat-screen TV, an open wardrobe and desk space, a fridge and bespoke toiletries.

So, if you’re looking for a staycation spot that has a simplified luxury concept with great service, design and price, The Chow Kit - An Ormond Hotel is your best bet!

Keep a look out for our next The Stay List feature (hint: it involves a tent and an outdoor bathroom!).
