This story about the Tanjong Jara Resort, Terengganu is written by one of our contributors, Azliana. Some parts of the article may have been edited for length and clarity.

My husband, our baby and I went to Tanjong Jara Resort, Dungun, for my husband's birthday trip. It was a 3 days and 2 nights trip on September 21st - 23rd, 2019. We went there by flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu. Then we rented a car and drove to Dungun, which took about 1 hour. It is a 4-5 hours journey from Kuala Lumpur.

I decided to go to this resort because it was in my wishlist for places/resorts to stay at for beach vacations. I read many good reviews and saw beautiful pictures of this resort.

P.S. Take a road trip to the East Coast with our 5D4N itinerary of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan!

Ambience at Tanjong Jara Resort

Tanjong Jara Resort is located in Dungun, Terengganu. It is a secluded and private beachfront resort, facing the South China Sea.

The resort architecture is inspired by Malay palaces with a lot of heritage value. We could see the resort is furnished with timber.

Travellers can spend their vacation in the resort without going out to other places as they provide many activities and facilities. It is also a perfect place for honeymooners. To Dungun town only takes 10 minutes by car or motorcycle.

What I like the most about this resort is the secluded location, the beautiful beach, superb hospitality by staff and variation of facilities/activities. All the staff are very friendly and helpful. They welcomed us and made us feel very comfortable.

My family enjoyed strolling at the beach and garden. There is also a hammock and gazebo overlooking the beach where travellers can sit back and relax while enjoying the sea breeze. Travellers also may find biawak (monitor lizard) and peacocks roaming freely around the resort.

Rooms at Tanjong Jara Resort

Mostly the rooms are facing the beach and surrounded by gardens. Some room types are on the upper floor (the stairs are quite high), ground floor or a semi-d design.

We stayed in the Serambi Seaview Kingbed Room (located on the ground floor). Our room was quite big and comfortable enough for the three of us. This room also has a walk-in closet (big enough to store all bags), a seating area (really cosy) and a verandah facing the beach (so breezy).

But the most attractive room is Anjung Room, the semi-d type. This room type has an outdoor bath in its own private garden!

The price range of my room type is around RM700-1000 based on season. I booked it directly from the resort's website. The price varies for other room types.

Special facilities and packages

I booked the Room and Breakfast rate which consists of:

  • daily breakfast for two
  • A complimentary 50-minutes couple massage per room per stay
  • Kampong Suci Murni lifestyle
  • Jara Hill Walk

Some activities are inclusive if booked directly from the resort's website.

The Spa Village won an award, and has many kinds of treatment for him and her, also as a couple. The spa environment is very calm and relaxing.

This resort also is a child-friendly resort. They can provide a baby cot by request. Kids can play in the pool and beach, play tennis and go to the library.

This resort has 2 pools, one is near the beach and the other in the middle of the resort. Gym is also provided.

Activities at the resort

Activities offered by the resort are spa, snorkelling and dive programmes (seasonal activity), Jara Hill Walk (nature walk), Kampong Suci Murni (a Malay way of living), outdoor games and turtle watch (seasonal) and many more.

We enjoyed one of the events in this resort which is Kampong Suci Murni, where we experienced kampong-style traditional music and delicacies.

This resort also provides a private dining experience.

Since it's my husband's birthday trip, I planned for a picnic and dinner at the resort. In the afternoon, we went to Picnic By The Beach, served a gourmet picnic basket in a gazebo with a bed facing the sea.

At night, we went for a South China Sea dinner, a five-course meal served under a gazebo on a sand beach. All the meals are very delicious. Make sure to do advanced reservations. For private events (eg: wedding celebration) may discuss with them.

Halal food at Tanjong Jara Resort

Tanjong Jara Resort has several restaurants (which include a bar). They serve halal food, but also serve non-halal drinks. Breakfast spread was very delicious at Di Atas Sungei restaurant.

In Dungun, it is very easy to find halal food everywhere. Travellers may enjoy eating fresh seafood at nearby seafood restaurants.

Useful tips for other travellers
