Sahur is undoubtedly the most important meal during Ramadan, but many of us would much rather sacrifice food over sleep. We get you, you’re exhausted and waking up at 5 am to eat is near to impossible for many ? But you’re not doing yourself any good. You need a well-balanced meal to provide you with all the energy you need to handle your multiple responsibilities, and if you’re just surviving on a kurma, your day would simply be unproductive, and you won’t have a fruitful Ramadan ?

While it’s not obligatory for you to have sahur (it’s a sunnah), don’t underestimate the importance of it as it is a meal that is filled with blessings. As the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:  تَسَحَّرُوا فَإِنَّ فِي السَّحُورِ بَرَكَةً “Have Sahur, for there is a blessing in Sahur.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

1. Honey Roasted Chicken Sliders

If you’re not up for a hearty sahur meal, but looking for something that fills you up quickly, these Honey Roasted Chicken Sliders are the way to go. Preparation & cooking time: 15 mins

Ingredients:

  • Sadia Honey Roasted Chicken Leg (1 pack)
  • 6 slider buns or 4 burger buns, sliced in half horizontally and buttered
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions:

  • Prepare the chicken according to the instruction options on the packet.
  • Slice the Sadia Honey Roasted Chicken Leg portions sufficient for the number of buns.
  • Place chicken onto buttered buns, top with 1 tbsp cheese and bun.
  • Place in a preheated 180°C oven and bake for 5 min until the cheese has melted.

2. Rice with egg and soy sauce with chicken

Ahhh, the old classic. Many of us have eaten this dish since we were children. There's a reason why this simple dish could usually please even the pickiest eater - it's so good in its simplicity, and so comforting ? It also makes for a quick sahur meal - especially when you have leftover rice from iftar the previous day (or if you're the kind to plan ahead, keep supplies of cooked rice in your freezer!). If you're willing to take one step further, feel free to fry up any frozen-food accompaniment, such as Sadia’s Breaded Chicken Cutlet if you’re craving something crunchy! ?

Ingredients

  • Sadia’s Breaded Chicken Cutlet
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups of cooked rice
  • Soy Sauce

Instructions:

  • Reheat your rice for 3-4 minutes in the microwave
  • Cook up your eggs however you like and have your kicap (soy sauce) on hand to pour to taste.

3. Mala Chicken Wings with Garlic Onion Mash

Here’s something more filling for your family of 4! Spicy wings paired with savoury mashed potatoes infused with caramelised onion, it’s truly a comforting dish perfect for sahur ?

Preparation & cooking time: 15 mins

Feeds: 4 people

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack Sadia's Sichuan Mala Chicken Wings
  • 1kg potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 3/4 cups whole milk
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 5 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp of spring onion, thinly chopped
  • 2 tbsp Sour Cream

Instructions:

  1. Place the 1kg of peeled and quartered potatoes into a large pot and boil until soft
  2. In a small pot, mix 3 cloves of garlic, crushed, and 3/4 cups of whole milk.
  3. Place the pot over low heat and bring to a simmer while continuously stirring
  4. Heat the packet of Sadia's Sichuan Mala Chicken Wings according to instructions on the packaging. 
  5. Once potatoes are softened, place them into a large bowl and using a fork or a masher, mash them into smaller chunks.
  6. Then, slowly strain out the milk and pour it into the potatoes.
  7. Add 5 tbsp of unsalted butter, 2 tbsp of sour cream, salt and black pepper to taste, and 2 tbsp of spring onion into the bowl. Mash until creamy.
  8. Serve the mash onto a plate and the Sadia'sSichuanMala Chicken Wings on top of it.

4. Quesadilla

This might be the simplest dish ever because you’ll only need two ingredients: store-bought tortillas and lots of cheese. Gone are the days of dragging your feet to prepare sahur! Take it up a notch and add some Sadia’s Pepper Grilled Chicken Breast for some added zing ?

Preparation & cooking time: 15 mins

Ingredients:

  • Sadia’s Pepper Grilled Chicken Breast cut into bite-sized pieces after being cooked 
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese
  • 2 flour tortillas
  • ½ cup of salsa for taste
  • o½ cup of guacamole for taste
  • ½ cup of chopped tomatoes (if you wish)
  • Jalapenos (if you wish)

Instructions:

  • Cut it into bite-sized pieces once it’s done
  • Spread your shredded cheese between each tortilla and toast in a frying pan until the cheese melts.
  • Cut your tortillas into triangles and serve with some salsa and guacamole

5. Coconut Pancakes with Nasi Lemak

Who says you can’t have pancakes for sahur? Technically, it’s like breakfast. Pancakes are one of the easiest meals that can be prepared for sahur in Ramadan. It’s delicious and nutritious, which makes it enough to last you throughout your day. These coconut pancakes are light and fluffy, perfect for a sahur meal that’s not too overwhelming! ?

Preparation time: 5 mins

Cooking time: 10 mins

Feeds: 2 people

Ingredients

  • 1 pack Sadia's Nasi Lemak Chicken Wings
  • Coconut Pancakes:
    • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    • 2 tbsp sugar
    • 1 tsp baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp baking soda
    • 1/4 tsp salt
    • 1/4 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut
    • 1 egg, beaten
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk
    • 3/4 cup coconut milk
    • 1 tbsp melted unsalted butter
    • Additional butter or some cooking oil for cooking

Instructions

  • Mix all 6 dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, add the remaining wet ingredients to the beaten egg and combine well.
  • Mix the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until incorporated. Don't overmix.
  • Heat the Sadia's Nasi Lemak Chicken Wings according to the instructions on the packaging.
  • In a hot skillet, add some butter to coat the pan.
  • Over medium-high heat, drop rounds of batter (about a scoop using a ladle) and cook until bubbles begin to pop in centre of the pancakes, for about 2 mins.
  • Flip pancakes and cook for an additional minute or so until golden brown. Test cook surface and temperature, and adjust cook time accordingly.
  • Serve the pancakes on a plate, and when the chicken wings are ready, place it on top of the pancakes.
  • Garnish with some maple syrup if preferred (or on the side), and some side salads or cucumber to give the dish some freshness. Enjoy while it's hot!

6. Upgraded instant noodles

Don’t be alarmed by the term, ‘upgraded’. You’re just making your all-time favourite instant noodles with just a hint of finesse to make your sahur more filling! Moreover, if you really are just pressed for time, instant noodles are always a handy meal in the house. Ingredients

  • 1 red onion, sliced

Instructions

  • Boil your instant noodles as usual. Drain it and put it aside once it's done.

  • Heat up your pot and add the oil, onion, thawed chicken breast, chilli and vegetables. Stir fry onmedium heat until your chicken fully heated.

7. Nasi Lemak with Chicken Wings

Preparing a heavenly nasi lemak dish all by yourself sounds like a lot of work, but this recipe cuts down a huge portion of your preparation time by almost half! Now, you can dig into a steaming plate of nasi lemak from your very own kitchen whenever you’d like, without having to purchase it all the time! 

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 10 minutes

Feeds: 2 people

Ingredients

  •  1 pack Sadia's Nasi Lemak Chicken Wings
  • Coconut Milk Rice:
    • 0.2 kg rice, preferably basmati rice, 5 1/2 cups
    • 1.2 cups water
    • 40 ml Thick coconut milk, 1 coconut
    • 0.6 pandan leaves, knotted and slightly bruised
    • 0.4 stick lemongrass, crushed
    • 0.2 ginger, crushed
    • 0.2 tsp sugar, to taste
    • 0.4 tsp salt, to taste
    • Sambal ikan bilis

Instructions

  • Firstly, rinse the rice well and drain all the water out. Afterwards, transfer to a rice cooker and pour 50ml (1/4) of the thick coconut milk into a cup.
  • Do dilute the coconut mixture with some water accordingly. 
  • Add in salt and sugar and stir to mix. Pour the coconut milk mixture into the rice cooker. Add in additional water to make sure the volume of the watery coconut milk is the same as the rice in volume, which is roughly about 6 cups. 
  • Add in crushed ginger, lemongrass and pandan leaves. Switch on the rice cooker and cook the rice.
  • While waiting for your rice to be cooked, heat up the Sadia's Nasi Lemak Chicken Wings according to the cooking instructions on the package. 
  • When the rice is almost cooked, add the balance (150ml) of the thick coconut milk.
  • Stir the rice. Close the lid and continue cooking until done.
  • Serve cooked rice with chicken wings and a side of sambal ikan bilis.

8. Mala Olio Spaghetti

Delicious and packed with bold flavours, this dish has everything you love - spicy, cheesy and filling! The best part of this dish? It is an ideal quick and easy dish, great for those who are just not morning people! ?

Preparation time: 8 mins

Cooking time: 7 mins

Feeds: 2 people

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 pack spaghetti (for 2 pax)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1.5L water
  • 30g fresh shimeiji mushrooms
  • 1/4 onion, sliced
  • 1 stalk parsley, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • black pepper
  • 1/2 tbsp mala paste

Instructions:

  1. Add water, salt and olive oil to a pot. Add spaghetti when water boils and cook for 8 minutes.
  2. Prepare Sadia's Sichuan Mala Chicken Wings according to instructions on the packaging.
  3. Add olive oil, onions and garlic to the pan. Add mushrooms when onions soften.
  4. Add 2 tbsp spaghetti water, spaghetti, and mala paste.
  5. Stir gently to mix everything well.
  6. Carefully plate spaghetti and top it with the wings. Garnish with parsley and serve.
