Fascinating, beautiful ruins of an ancient city. They're very spread out, so if you don't have a driver you may want to consider hiring one, or a bicycle. Once you've entered the main site, you can't leave and return, so plan lunch accordingly. Some of the sites are holy, so you need to cover your arms and legs to visit, and also remove your shoes. The stones are very sharp underfoot!

The ancient capital with many amazing sites to visit. If you like history and archeology it is a must see and you can tailor your time at each site accordingly. We were all fascinated by the sites and as everywhere in Sri Lanka, the people are almost always simply lovely.

We went on a Monday morning at opening of the site and had the place almost to ourselves. Well preserved ruins and temples but felt very museum ish. Some big stupas in scaffold. Take a bike as the site is big to navigate. Fresh coconut juice and water sold everywhere! Tickets are expensive at 30 USD pp.

Polonnaruwa is an incredibly fascinating historical site that offers a deep dive into Sri Lanka’s ancient past. Highlights like the Gal Vihara rock-cut Buddhas are both powerful and serene. It’s a place that deserves time and attention, not just for history lovers but for anyone wanting to better understand the cultural richness of Sri Lanka. Highly recommended.

If you want to see how advanced Sri Lanka was in the past, the place to go is the Polonnaruwa Rock Monastery. It is best to visit it in the morning as the sun is very hot. The Buddha statue in the Rock Monastery is so majestic that it is difficult to even imagine how it was carved.
