A great place to visit although you don’t need to be there too long, lots and lots of street food and places to buy gifts. Right in the centre of the old city surrounded by the old city wall, it was such a difference compared to the Ever Bright / Eventbright City.

The muslim quarters is just next to the Drum Tower. There's an open air street market during the day and night. Lots of food stalls and souvenir shops. Meander through the stalls to reach The Great Mosque.

Lots of halal shops, food or otherwise! Mosque is also close by! It is right in the city center and near the Xi’an drum. Lots of local delights with halal symbol all over!! look out for this symbol 清真 it means halal in Chinese. Usually written in green color but there are also other shops that is not halal but they can have green color signage so be extra careful to compare with this word 清真 before buying anything.

The Muslims probably from the time of the Silk Road to now have completely assimilated into the Chinese culture. There are approximately 50k Chinese Muslims living in the city. What is a glimpse into their daily lives is the rows and rows of restaurants where you can get almost anything except of course pork and non-halal stuff. Some food stuff don’t look all that hygienic but just choose freshly and fully cooked ones. The claypot dishes we got were absolutely scrumptious and we couldn’t be happier that it came with unli rice.

The Muslim Quarter is a must-visit when you’re in Xi’an! It’s a vibrant and lively area filled with amazing street food, rich culture, and a strong Muslim presence. As a Muslim traveler, I always made sure to eat at restaurants or food stalls that display the Qing Zhen logo, which indicates that the food is halal. Everything here is cheap, delicious, and full of variety. We had so much fun going from one stall to another, tasting different snacks and local specialties. Besides food, there are also many souvenir shops selling everything from local crafts to snacks you can take home. The streets are clean, well-maintained, and easy to navigate. One thing to note is that almost all payment is done cashless—using Alipay or WeChat Pay. Some places still accept cash, but it’s best to bring small notes for convenience. The Muslim Quarter is also conveniently located near the Xi’an Great Mosque, so you can easily stop by for prayer while exploring the area. Overall, it’s a lively and welcoming spot that truly showcases the Muslim heritage in Xi’an. Don’t miss it!
