A bit pricy compared to all the options around, but the amount of ingredients is quite worth it. The spicy beef noodle comes with ground beef, sliced beef and tendon. Good flavour, I like you can add your own onions, nori and tempura bits. The queue can get quite long so need to come early.

It’s a little hard to find this stall as it is obsured by a few shops, but despite the price it is always full house during lunch, I finally knew why after eating here. My Japanese friends describe this udon as ‘authentic, good texture and definitely on par or exceed some Japanese shops’. The surprising part is the chicken, it has a really good savory taste without the excessive spike in salt. Highly recommended. Only issue is no vegetables but so does many other udon shops.

Came on a Friday for lunch. Thankfully we got seats for our group of 5. I ordered beef noodles. The soup was balanced and they were generous with the beef slices. The udon was cooked just right. You add the toppings (spring onions, tempura bits, chilli powder) yourself. It's self service ordering, payment and collection. They have hot or cold tea that you help yourself with. We ordered burdock tempura (forgot to take a picture) and smoked duck slices to share. If you're vegetarian, the burdock tempura udon is a good option. Can taste the sweetness of the burdock and the batter is not too thick. Not really a fan of smoked duck... it's not too salty and ok to eat as a side without needing to drink a lot of water.

I have been to Fumen since before covid around 2020 & I found that their food have been very consistent. Here’s my review after patronising them for quite some time. Taste: 9/10 The main dish that is at Fumen is the beef broth udon. They also provide dipping udon, dry udon & don. The beef broth is really delicious. It is not too overwhelming on the beef nor is it too heavy on the spices. Everything is just right. The taste is really refreshing when eaten hot, and leaves a silky feel in the mouth. I’ve tried udon in Japan and I found that the broth here is comparable to those in Japan. The udon noodles are also the right texture. They are springy with a light bite making it easy and comforting to eat with the broth. As for the other dishes, I recommend the spicy fried chicken. These chicken are essentially karage, but the light amount of spice makes it really enjoyable. They’ll provide with kewpie mayo to round the taste of. The inari sushi is also something to try out. The rice is not densely packed and is filling to eat. Paired with the tofu skin, the rice and the light soya sauce makes it a dish you should try. Consistency: 10/10 Over the years that I’ve been here, the taste has been consistently the same. Even with the opening and closing of other outlets, and what seems to be different chefs from the original chef, the taste continues to be refreshing and delicious. Time and time again I look forward to having a meal here. Value for money: 8/10 The price ranges from $10 to $19.90. The price has definitely increased over the years but the portions remained the same. Udon with beef or chicken toppings cost more than the plain one, but with ability to customise your udon, the meal isn’t so heavy on your wallet. Inari has definitely felt the most increase ($1 -> $2) However, they provide free cold and hot roasted barley tea, which I definitely recommend to try. The tea is without sugar and is the perfect complement to the dishes here.
