The High Line is an absolute gem that New York should never lose. Just the idea of revitalizing an old railway into a public green space is brilliant—it’s a shining example of creative urban renewal. This raised walkway offers a truly unique way to experience the city. A great place to walk in New York, the High Line runs above the streets of Manhattan’s West Side, providing fantastic views of the bustling neighborhoods below. There’s so much to see along the way—lush plants and trees, striking sculptures, and ever-changing art installations. I even saw a huge pigeon sculpture that really stood out! Originally constructed in the 1930s, the High Line was part of the West Side Improvement Project. It served as an elevated freight rail line, removing train traffic from dangerous street-level routes. For decades, it carried goods directly into warehouses and factories. After falling into disuse in the 1980s, the line was nearly demolished. Fortunately, a grassroots group called Friends of the High Line fought to preserve and repurpose it. Their efforts paid off when the first section opened to the public in 2009. Now, the High Line is not just a park—it's a piece of living history, a cultural destination, and a perfect place to walk, relax, and take in the unique character of New York City.
It's a fantastic elevated park built on an old rail line, offering stunning views of the Hudson River and the city. The High Line features beautiful gardens, public art installations, and plenty of spots to relax and enjoy the scenery. Some popular spots include: - The Standard's observation deck - Little Island - Chelsea Market
Absolutely love the High Line. It’s an amazing place to escape the buzzing city for a while and enjoy a stroll through the green while having great views of the city. There are cool events, art projects, and chill seating areas as well. It’s free and there for everyone. Really happy this staple of NYC history exists and highly recommend to come by and support it!
I first experienced the High Line a few years ago, and ever since, it’s become a must-do whenever I’m in New York. I’ve walked it in the depths of winter and in the heat of summer, and every time, it’s a rewarding experience. It offers a peaceful escape from the city’s noise and chaos, like hitting pause in the middle of Manhattan. From this elevated path, you get a bird’s-eye view of the streets below, and your senses are awakened by the beauty of nature: blooming flowers, the scent of blossoms, trickling water, and birdsong. It’s a different side of New York, and one that never fails to inspire.
Awesome park on a reclaimed train track above the city streets. Features beautiful wildflowers and trees interspersed with various modern art installations. Can get super busy - go early or late in the day to avoid the crowds. Loads of places to sit and soak in your surroundings and a smattering of places to buy food and art souvenirs. A wonderful escape from the city streets.
