Visited strictly to watch the changing of the guards and it’s more of a theatrical performance than an actual changing of the guards because they don’t stand guard 24/7 but it was still a very cool experience! Happens 2x a day so plan for the spectacle. Guards will temporarily stay to take photos too!

This absolutely fantastic design of a gate is located between the main entrance and the Palace itself. The architecture shows a passion for detail unparalleled anywhere in the world. It is stunning in person more than it is in pictures. The amount of detail is inmense. The ceremony of the guard's change takes place near this gate and it is almost mandatory to see it if you come here.

Heungnyemun Gate is the second gate to Gyeongbokgung Palace, and its name means “Gate of Flourishing Courtesy.” It’s a stunning piece of traditional architecture, blending simplicity with elegance. Passing through it feels like entering a royal world, with the wide courtyard setting the stage for grandeur. It’s a great spot to soak in the rich history of the Joseon Dynasty.

Heungnyemun Gate (흥례문), often called the "Heightening Gate", is the striking second inner gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, serving as a majestic prelude to the throne hall, Geunjeongjeon. This beautifully restored structure, with its sweeping tiled roof and vibrant dancheong (traditional paintwork), was where royal officials would assemble before ceremonies, embodying the hierarchy and grandeur of the Joseon Dynasty. Unlike the bustling Gwanghwamun (main gate), Heungnyemun offers a quieter moment to admire Joseon-era craftsmanship—especially the intricate carvings and elevated stone walkway reserved for the king. The view through its arched entrance, framing Geunjeongjeon against the backdrop of Bugaksan Mountain, is one of Seoul’s most iconic photo spots. Visit during weekdays or early mornings to avoid crowds and soak in its serene authority.
