Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria - Melbourne Gardens, Birdwood Ave, South Yarra VIC 3141, Australia
Fantastic place to visit if you like gardens and cacti/succulents. Weekends are very busy so get there early. Lovely formal succulent garden nearby. NOTE: This was never a real volcano despite what you may have heard?
Such an interesting piece of design that is both beautiful and functional. As with all things in the Botanical gardens Guilfoyle's is well thought out, practical and beautifully executed. Accessible from both sides of the garden for all abilities, it's a pleasure to walk up to the top and get an understanding of how it all works and the useful purpose it serves. Once at the top, there's some great views of the city and the rest of the gardens.
Part of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, the Guilfoyle's Volcano is a beautiful area covered in mostly cacti. On top of the "volcano" there is a pond with all kinds of birds. Walking paths are very well maintained and offer access to the top even for wheelchairs. Not very busy so it's easy to take some nice pictures without people around. The area is not that big so be sure you don't miss it when visiting the Gardens.
Nice but make sure you check arbitrary nature of gardens closing times as you might get caught out.
A beautifully xeriscaped area full of colorfully contrasting cacti, succulents, and bromeliads shown off at all angles by winding pathways and of course the elevated "volcano" itself, which affords an excellent view of the surrounding city. It's easily my favorite part of the Botanical Gardens.
