Hiking Dolukanda Dolukanda, a table mountain in the Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka's North-Western Province, has a forested plateau with vertical drops in several directions. Nonetheless, the summit can be reached safely on a good hiking trail. There are numerous highly attractive viewpoints at the edges of the long plateau of Dolukanda and some further attractions, such as a rock shelter and darkwater ponds. Better to take the service of a local guide.

A Must-Try Hiking Adventure in Sri Lanka! If you’re thinking of going on a hike, don’t overthink—just go for it! This was one of my first hiking experiences, and I must say, it was nothing short of incredible. Even if you’re a beginner, don’t let that hold you back. The climb is absolutely worth it. Once you reach the summit, the view will take your breath away—truly a sight you won’t find anywhere else. When we reached the top, we were greeted by a gentle rain. It wasn’t heavy, but it added a magical touch to the experience. That moment made me appreciate nature even more. It was a raw and beautiful reminder of how amazing the world can be. A word of advice: this hike isn’t something to attempt on a whim. It’s not impossible, but preparation is key. If you’re someone who’s not used to daily walks or physical activity, it might be a bit challenging. I’d recommend starting some light walking or basic workouts at least a month before your hike. The entire journey, up and down, adds up to roughly 13,000 steps. For us, the whole experience took about six hours—including stops for photos and some rest time at the top. However, if you’re an experienced hiker, you can probably make it up in an hour or so. One important tip: be extra cautious on your way down. The trail can get tricky, so take your time. And please, whatever you take into the jungle, bring it back with you. We only spotted a couple of plastic bags, which we made sure to collect, but let’s all do our part to preserve these beautiful places. If you’re visiting Sri Lanka and love hiking, I highly recommend this trail. It’s a stunning experience that you’ll carry with you forever. Just remember to prepare, stay mindful of the environment, and embrace the beauty of nature. This place is a gem—don’t miss it!

Beautiful hike , somewhat easier in comparison to other hikes. We started at around 8am. At 10.30 we were at the peak. After spending about an hour, we started our descend. By 12.30 we were done. We only brought some water and biscuits only.

What an experience! Manesh is a local man who has hiked this mountain so many times he knows the paths by heart. He is kind and patient and we had great conversation walking up together with his dog Stella who stopped to check if we were okay every so often. What a great hike we had that day even if it rained. The view is spectacular and since it's not so obviously touristy it's a breath of fresh air. Very much enjoyed it, definitely recommended.

We were a group of four and had a fantastic hike with Mahesh. He was very kind, helpful, and knew a lot about the area. Mahesh showed us the best places on Dolukanda and also gave us many useful tips. He even helped us find a driver for our next destination! Without a guide, it would be very hard to find all the best spots on Dolukanda. The paths split many times and there are almost no signs. Even for experienced hikers, it would be difficult to find the way. But with Mahesh, we never had a problem! After the hike, Mahesh gave us snacks and drinks, which was really nice. Some tips for other hikers: ?Bring enough water because it gets hot. ? Wear strong shoes and sports clothes because some parts are steep and rocky. ? Our hike took about 4 hours with breaks. If you are not used to hiking, plan for more time. If you want to hike Dolukanda, Mahesh is the perfect guide! Highly recommended ☺️?
