Lovely and underrated art museum in the China Expo Pavilion building. When we went in August 2024 there was an excellent exhibit of oil paintings by Chinese artists with a wide range of styles and capturing scenes from modern Chinese life for subjects from live-streamers to new parents. Also some very exciting contemporary artwork that integrated art, technology, and data in a way I haven't seen before. No tickets necessary, though identification was required for special exhibits.

Solid museum with incredible architecture. The China Pavilion at Shanghai Expo is a huge structure, in which a part of the museum is located. The directions in the museum were pretty confusing, I couldn't find an English map or something similar. So when I left I had no idea if I'd seen everything, but it's free so I didn't really mind that much. For the permanent exhibition 《清明上河图》 ("Along the River During the Qingming Festival") you do need to buy a ticket, CNY20, but it's definitely worth it. The exhibition consists of 12 projectors, but it's like you're watching one huge screen (128 meter long and 6.5 meters high). The work has people of characters and animals in a day and night cycle, as if the picture is alive.

Nice museum. I'll focus on the thing I didn't like. All major Chinese museums have a required "propaganda art" section. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The gallery at NAMOC in Beijing is fantastic, and portrays a really interesting and diverse set of artistic styles and subjects throughout the PRC's history. The one here is god-awful. A dozen of the same hideous realist paintings featuring whatever boring meeting of the Party. The absolute worst is that triptych with some random foreigners standing among like... AI and electric cars and whatever? Hahaha. Skip gallery 3.

The China Art Museum in Shanghai—also known as the China Pavilion from the 2010 World Expo—is not only one of the largest art museums in Asia, but also a striking architectural landmark. Located in Pudong’s Expo Park, it showcases modern and traditional Chinese art, but for many visitors, the building itself is the true masterpiece.
