Attic Backpackers was my hostel of choice initially because of the camping tour I booked. The pickup point was right in front of the hostel, but that has since changed due to construction of the new underground railway. Regardless, I stayed 2 nights in the six-bed female dorm. My roommates were nice. The facilities were clean and well organized. I received emails regarding the check-in process. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. My experience was so good, I booked additional nights at the end of my tour. I was even able to book the single room for my last 3 nights. So, I do recommend booking a bed in this hostel. To be honest, I did read some of the previous reviews, especially the negative ones. I have to tell you, those bad reviews are old and this hostel has since resolved many of those issues and is under terrific management.
The staff here is incredibly nice and welcoming, they really seem to care about their guests. Everything is kept super clean, and it looks a lot better than some of the pictures I've seen online. The rooms are old but with how well taken care of they are, they are still really nice to stay in.
The attic did not disappoint. It has everything I look for in a hostel. It was clean. The staff was helpful and friendly. The kitchen had everything I needed and more. There were group spices and oils for cooking. There was plenty of space for dry food and foods needing refrigeration. There was a wonderful patio to sit at and enjoy a breeze, watch small birds, and eat. It was a peaceful place. If you have your own lock, you can put valuables into a locker, no charge. There was a TV room, a chill room, and even a quiet area. The usual rules applied -- wash, dry and put away your dishes; observe quiet hours, take your pillow case and bring it to the front with your keys when you leave; treat the staff with the kindness they deserve. Now it was a little noisy. However, that's because Auckland is a city building a subway at the foot of the building. And the Attic is located right in the middle of that vibrant city building a subway at the foot of the building. You are right near the bus terminal. You are in the very heart of clubs and restaurants and there is a bus or other options to get to the airport. Now when a person stays at a hostel you can expect that you might need a hair dryer or shampoo or a towel. So you should be delighted to get any of these and not worry if you don't get them all. At the attic there was a place for free stuff in the bathroom -- some people left shampoo. And there was a hair dryer. But you did have to pay to rent a towel. I didn't care and neither should you.
Had a lovely time staying here! Great location, friendly staff and warm atmosphere. It was clean and a nice stop on my trip around NZ, I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a hostel in the city!
Everything I expected from a hostel, and even more. There's a lot of little attentions that were clearly made by people who travel in hostels (the way the kitchen is organised, the extra shampoo left behind by other travellers, the shower design, etc). And the staff is very friendly and nice, they give great recommendations, and some even have nice playlists ?
