One of the things that happened during the pandemic was having hobbies again. I started making things with my hands — embroidery, punch needling, macrame and even took up painting. The only thing that stuck with me was punch needling because it requires minimum effort with maximum effect ? With punch needling, you can make a small table rug, a coaster and even a wall decor! So, when I started watching TikTok videos of people tufting their own rug, I was intrigued! Wanna know what tufting is? Read on!

Tufting studio and cafe

Using a tufting gun, you can create handmade rugs and the design opportunities are endless! No more generic rugs that hundreds of other people have too! When the tufting studio and cafe Happy Hour Club opened their doors a few months ago, I jumped at their invitation to try out tufting!

Calling themselves an experiential cafe, they offer butter bath toasts, freshly brewed coffee and most recently introduced lunch sets that you can enjoy before tufting your rug.

There are a few sizes that you can choose to make your rug. Their modular frame is able to cater to any frame size up to 5x2.5 meters and they’re able to accommodate a custom-size rug as well! I wasn’t ambitious so I settled for a 45x45cm rug size that I could finish in under two hours. The workshop for a rug this size is RM175.

No experience needed

If you have no prior experience in tufting, don’t worry as the staff will walk you through the basics of handling the tufting gun, as well as a few practice strokes. Basically, the tufting gun has a needle that pushes the yarn and a very sharp pair of scissors that cuts the yarn for that fuzzy effect.

Some safety measurements were also run through: long hair has to be tied up and always turn off the tufting gun when not in use.

Let’s get down to tufting

Tufting can look daunting at first but once you get the hang of it, it’s quite easy! Always start from the bottom up with some pressure. You want to make sure the monk’s cloth is taut as you move. Too little pressure and the individual tufts of yarn are too far apart, a little too much pressure, and the monk’s cloth would be left warped.

Still, not worries, tufting is a very forgiving art. If there are parts that you are not happy with, you can just pull the tufts out. There is a limit to this; the more you go over the same area, the looser the monk’s cloth will be, and you might end up with a hole. You’ll be able to have a few practice strokes before starting on your piece!

Why you should try tufting at Happy Hour Club

Happy Hour Club uses a weightless tufting system, so your shoulders won’t ache after tufting for hours. It’s like holding air — even kids can do it! I also loved that they used rug yarn instead of knitting yarn. It’s durable and crush-resistant it’ll bounce back if you step on it. Once you’re done tufting your rug, you don’t have to worry about finishing it as they’ll do professional binding edge so your rug would look store-bought!
