Love love love this place authentic, delicious Malaysian food. The best option is to get some small plates and one big plate and try a little bit of everything. So much flavor. The staff was very nice and food came quickly and was fresh. Definitely worth a stop in Auckland!

"Mamak in the City – But My Taste Buds Stayed in Malaysia"

Mamak Malaysian Restaurant sits right in the heart of Auckland City like a spicy little secret waiting to be found… until you actually try the food. The place is compact.  Cozy if you’re a couple… awkward if you’re on a first date and knock elbows over sambal.

Food portions? Respectable. You won’t leave hungry. Prices? Well, you’re in the city — meals range from $15 to $25, not including drinks.

Now, let’s talk taste — the main act.
We tried the Char Kuey Teow and Nasi Goreng. Verdict: 3 out of 5. Like your ex — it looked the part but lacked the heat. ? The Teh Tarik and Kopi O were also a 3 out of 5 — decent, but didn’t transport us back to a bustling mamak at midnight with roti flying through the air and uncles shouting football scores.

If you’re a Malaysian hoping to cure homesickness with one bite… you might need a top-up meal and a tissue. ? Not bad, just not quite “Malaysia Boleh!” levels.

But hey, food taste is subjective — maybe your char kuey teow soulmate is still on their stove.

Loved this place when I was a Uni student but it has changed ownership a couple of times and taste wise is not always consistent. Featured below is two of our staple orders: satay chicken with rice and nasi goreng. Each meal is always accompanied by a cup of hot teh tarik (that's just how I roll). This place doesn't take bookings but rock up and they'll accommodate you.

Went here for dinner last week and had the beef rendang and I was quite disappointed. It was flavourless and the beef was so dry. It looked like there was basically just water added to my curry (see photo below) and the cabbage wasn't great either. It needed to be finally chopped and not taste like it was just boiled. My teh tarik had no sweetness to it at all. It has to be the worst serving I've had since going here for over a decade. I think I'll go to the Takapuna branch from now on.

2024: While it was good to mix up the cuisine of the city's offerings, the flavours are somewhat lacking if Laksa is one of your favourite dishes.
Lacking in that shrimp paste hit, the serving size is mammoth and will satisfy most hungers.
