MAIZ truly left us in awe! From the moment we walked in, the staff was incredibly attentive, friendly, and eager to help. We chose to sit at the bar as a couple, and we thoroughly relished watching the bartenders craft some of the most exquisite margarita varieties we've experienced over the years. Their expertise and passion for their craft were unmistakable. When it came to the food, we were recommended the set menu priced at $70 per person, and it proved to be an excellent choice—delicious and satisfying! The welcome shot, the ESQUITES, and especially the main dish, the HUARACHE featuring tender beef cheeks, were absolute standouts for us. To top it off, the ice blocks served at the end added a surprisingly refreshing touch to the meal. While we weren’t particularly fond of the cactus tostada, everything else completely dazzled us. This Mexican restaurant has certainly carved a special place in our memories!
The Taquito de Papada al Pastor was okay but didn’t stand out, and for $16, the portion felt quite small. The Sope de Pollo al Pibil was also okay. On the bright side, the totopos were good, and our favorite was the esquites—it was really well done, and both my partner and I enjoyed it a lot.
Favourite food I’ve had in a really really long time, we were truly transported to Mexico. Unreal food and cocktails, and super high quality. Perfect balance for veggies and meat eaters alike (we all loved the cactus to share). Really innovative menu which the staff was happy to explain and answer all our questions. Thanks for a great night!
Booked myself in for tostada Tuesday and was not disappointed. The toastadas were so good a little hard to eat but had great flavour. The guacamole and chips were a banger too. The machete was decent I did find it a bit hard to cut through but found the beef filling to be very delicious. Parking difficult as always in Newtown. Highly recommend booking as it's always packed. It was actually. My 2nd time returning here as first time I came without a booking and got rejected.
Being a Mexican in Australia is tough when it comes to food—most places think Tex-Mex is Mexican, and it’s…let’s just say not great. But Maíz? They’re doing it right! The esquites were perfection—no sweetness despite the yellow corn, and the al pastor taco tasted like home (though sliced meat would make it even more traditional, but who’s nitpicking?). Can’t wait to come back for Tostada Tuesdays and the bottomless margarita brunch. Only wish the website was easier to navigate as Menu pages can be confusing (reason for the 4/5 in service). Overall, a solid spot for a taste of Mexico! Place can be BUSY, so reserve a table ahead of time.
