When is Langkawi opening?

On 17 July 2021, the Ministry Of Tourism, Arts & Culture announced that they're working on launching Langkawi as the first pilot destination for Malaysia's COVID-19 Free Destination Program. Set to kick off in three phases, the first phase will see the reopening of Langkawi to leisure travelers due to its secluded location, international and domestic flight networks, and small population.

Yesterday, 2 September 2021, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob confirmed that Langkawi will reopen to domestic travellers starting September 16. Other popular Malaysian islands will follow suit with the timeline depending on whether the vaccination target is met.

For those who are considering a quick island getaway this coming Malaysia Day, here are some hidden beaches in Langkawi to escape the crowd for a socially distant holiday.

If you're splurging on a stay at the Andaman or Datai luxury resorts, make sure to take advantage of their access to the private Datai Beach. This secluded pocket of paradise is perfect for you and your loved ones to enjoy a holiday free from massive crowds of people. Kick back, relax and let the waves wash your stress away.

2. Tanjung Rhu Beach

A small section of this beach is public so in order to find a spot away from people, your best bet would be to plan a stay at resorts with private access such as the Four Seaons or Tanjung Rhu Resort. Based on many visitors' experience, Tanjung Rhu beach has some of the best sunsets on the island. Not to mention the fact that a dense jungle shields it away from the rest of the island, giving the beach an air of silence and calmness.

3. Pantai Kok

While most of Pantai Kok is public, there are two resorts located on its idyllic stretch where you can escape to more private sections with sun loungers and changing facilities - The Danna Langkawi and The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi.

4. Rebak Island Beach

Rebak Island Beach is home to the exclusive Vivanta by Taj - a part of the Taj Hotels which is a luxury international hotel chain. Set on a private island just off the coast of Pantai Cenang, guests of the resort can enjoy some privacy on the secluded beach. Lounge in the sun, soak in the surf and feel a wave of calm wash over you as you admire the quiet surroundings.

5. Tuba Island Beach

Located 5km southwest of Kuah Town, Tuba Island is an underrated destination that should be on everyone's must-visit spot in Langkawi. The beach offers nothing but amazing views of the sea and coastal cliffs, so prepare yourself for a scenic holiday here. Need a place to rest your head for a night or two? Seek out Faridzuan Motel, a family run accommodation that's conveniently located near local halal restaurants.

Pantai Cenang is one of the most popular spots in Langkawi and no doubt attracts plenty of visitors. If you want to visit this beach and still be away from the crowds, we suggest staying at Casa Del Mar located on the same stretch. The resort's private section of the beach will give you a slice of peace and quiet, and you can enjoy your vacation lounging on the chairs while taking in the sunset.

For those who are planning to visit Langkawi when it reopens, make sure to stay safe and adhere to social distancing measures at all times!
