During Ramadan, Muslims around the world are dedicating their time to give back to the community and helping others. In addition to the increase of rewards during the holy month, it deepens our sense of purpose and empathy towards people from all walks of life. If you’re looking for ways to empower our community to make a difference this Ramadan, here are some ideas to start!

1. Learn to live and work together for the common good

If you’re living in a multicultural society like Singapore, being a part of the community allows us to deepen our understanding towards others regardless of their background and faiths. As we grow stronger together, it also bridges cultural diversity. For example, Canon embodies a Japanese philosophy of Kyosei, meaning the spirit of living and working together for the common good. They believe that all people, regardless of race, religion or culture, should live harmoniously and work together towards a greater future. When the community embraces the kyosei philosophy, we’re able to foster better relationships with the people around us and work towards a common goal.

2. Practice sustainability

Creating a sustainable community begins with us, and there are many things we can do to practice sustainability in our daily lives. When you’re at home, you can reduce energy consumption by switching off the lights when not in use, utilising energy efficient kitchen appliances or recycling ink cartridges! Canon was the first in the world to initiate an extensive cartridge recycling programme and you can return used cartridges at various drop-off points in Singapore!

3. Contribute to social initiatives

Ramadan is also a significant month for us to give back to the community. Whether you’re buying clothes for a family in need or buying iftar meals for a local orphanage, small effort goes a long way. If you’re looking for ideas, Canon has dedicated their time in various social initiatives including a Canon Photography Exchange where they organised photography workshops and outings with four special needs schools in Singapore.

Besides that, Canon staff and family members also took part in Canon Singapore Coastal Cleanup where they rounded up bags of litters at the East Coast Park in 2019!

From practicing sustainability to contributing to social initiatives, these are just a few ways to empower our community to make a difference this Ramadan. We hope these ideas will inspire you to do good this month and the rest of the year ahead!
