5 Easy Swaps to Make Your Festive Dishes Healthier (Without Losing the Flavour!)

5 Easy Swaps to Make Your Festive Dishes Healthier (Without Losing the Flavour!)

Ramadan is around the corner, and you know what that means—the smell of rendang wafting through the house, the excitement of preparing buka puasa for our loved ones, and the joy of coming together to nourish our bodies and souls.

During this holy month, we often show our love through food. But here’s a little secret: taking care of our health is also a form of love and responsibility! By making just a few small tweaks to our favourite recipes, we aren't just eating healthier; we’re ensuring we have the energy to perform our extended night prayers in Ramadan and spend quality time with our families.

Through the Korang OK initiative by the Health Promotion Board (HPB), we’re here to show you that "healthy" doesn't mean "bland". In fact, kita dah cukup manis OK! (we’re sweet enough already!). We don’t need extra sugar or salt to make our meals special.

Ready to level up your kitchen game? Here are five easy, flavour-packed swaps for your festive dishes!

1. Spice It Up, Salt It Down

When we think of Malay cuisine, we think of bold, rich flavours. Often, we rely on salt or sauces to get that "kick." But did you know that nature has already given us everything we need?

The Swap: Instead of reaching for the saltshaker or extra bouillon cubes, reach out for your herbs and spices.

  • Use more: Turmeric (kunyit), ginger (halia), garlic - seen in illustration - galangal (lengkuas), and lemongrass (serai).
  • Why it works: These ingredients don't just add aroma; they add a depth of flavour that makes you forget you used less salt.

2. Swap White for "Mighty" Grains

We love our nasi, but eating too much white rice can sometimes lead to a quick energy spike followed by a "food coma"—not ideal when you want to stay awake for evening prayers!

The Swap: Fill a quarter of your plate with wholegrains. Mix some brown rice or red rice into your white rice or try whole-grain versions of noodles and bee hoon.

  • The Secret: If your family is hesitant, start slow! Try an 80/20 mix of white and brown rice.
  • Why it works: Whole grains are packed with fibre. This helps you feel full or longer and keeps your digestive system happy. It’s a pre-dawn meal game-changer to keep those hunger pangs at bay until sunset.

3. Choose "Happy" Proteins

We all love a good Ayam Goreng, but deep-frying can hide the natural taste of the meat under layers of batter and oil.

The Swap: Switch from deep-frying to grilling, baking, or air-frying.

  • Pro-Tip: For your Lauk, choose leaner cuts of meat or chicken with visible fat removed. Alternate with plant-based proteins like tofu, taukwa, beans or lentils for protein with low fat content.
  • Why it works: Grilling seals in the natural juices of the chicken or fish. When you marinate your protein with fresh garlic and spices instead of heavy batters, the real flavour shines through without the extra fat.

4. Coconut Milk: The Healthier Alternative

Santan is the backbone of many of our festive favourites, from Lodeh to Rendang. While we love the creaminess, it can be quite high in saturated fat.

The Swap: Use low-fat plain yoghurt.

  • Why it works: You still get that velvety texture and rich mouthfeel, but it’s much lighter on the heart. Your Rendang will still be the talk of the town, we promise!

5. Be a "Nutri-Grade" Ninja

After a day of fasting, a cold, sweet drink feels like a reward. But many traditional cordials are packed with hidden sugars. Remember the Korang OK tagline: "Minuman Kami Kurang Gula. Kita Dah Cukup Manis OK!"

The Swap: Look for beverages with the Healthier Choice Symbol or those graded Nutri-Grade A or B.

  • The Upgrade: Infuse your water with slices of lemon, mint leaves, or cucumber for a refreshing buka puasa drink. If you’re making tea or coffee, ask for "kosong" or "kurang manis."
  • Why it works: Reducing sugar helps prevent that while keeping you hydrated. You’ll feel lighter and more refreshed!

Bonus: The Secret to a Powerful Pre-dawn Meal

To keep your energy levels soaring from dawn to dusk, focus on a "Power pre-dawn meal." This is the best time to keep a balanced diet:

  • Wholegrains: Oats, whole-grain bread, to give your body energy and keep you full for longer.
  • Good sources of protein: Eggs. low-fat dairy (milk, cheese, yoghurt)*, nuts or beans to keep your muscles fuelled. (*Low-fat dairy is not suitable for children below 2 years old.)
  • Fruits and vegetables: Cucumber, lettuce, banana or avocado to protect you against infections.
