Formerly known as Singapore Philatelic Museum, it’s now called Children's Museum Singapore (CMSG) following extensive renovations. The Children's Museum Singapore believes in the power of play and provides opportunities for children to explore and engage with Singapore and the world around them based on its vision of creating a place of wonder and joy for children to learn about Singapore and the world! ? With two floors worth of exciting and interactive displays, you’ll want to get comfortable because you might be staying a while. ?
A voyage to the past
A visit to Children's Museum Singapore is a great way to teach your kids about Singapore's history. The first section of the museum takes you on an olden day ship where the kids will get to learn about the various spices that were being traded at the ports in Singapore. There are displays of real treasures dating back centuries ago and an area where you can smell and feel what sailors would have experienced living for months on the ships in their living quarters (it’s very immersive!). ?
You can even try “fishing” aboard the ship, weigh “goods” to be traded at the market, transport “good” from the ship to the land by walking on a wooden plank and even “clean” the olden day Singapore River through an interactive display! ? This section may even teach you a thing or two about Singapore’s rich history.
The next section shares about Singapore’s rich history as a mutli-cultural nation. You’ll see old shophouses with a bustling marketplace, a hair salon, a textile shop (where the kids can learn how to put on a sarong and sari), and an herbal store. These places are a nod to the country’s vast and memorable past where people lived in closely knit communities! ? The little ones can listen to stories of shopkeepers, and try heritage trades like acting as a street barber or traditional letter writer. This section will lead you to a modern day post office where you can create your own stamp drawings and explore a void deck-themed zone.
Nature-themed Play Pod
You will find the Play Pod to be a great place to explore if you have active toddlers! The Play Pod is a safe space for children aged between 2 to 4 to run around, crawl through tunnels, play with toy produce (like picking mangoes and pears), and even “cook” meals for you on an old-school food cart. How nostalgic!
Right next door, you’ll be brought into a Garden Maze where the little ones can learn about the birds and wildlife native to Singapore in a maze-style exhibition. There are interactive games and sensory installations where you can smell wild flowers like Orchids to Rafflesia (beware of the stench!). ?
Happy birthday
The last section of the museum shares stories of childhood from a gallery of cultural practices done by each culture when a baby is born to the types of birthday cakes traditionally served at birthday parties (like Kaya Pandan Cake and Pulut Kuning). ? It’s a great way to open up little minds to the different races, cultures and traditions in Singapore!
