One of the latest food trends that have made headlines in Singapore this year is plant-based meat products made by US startup Impossible Foods. In case you’re wondering what it is, this “meat” is made from soy and it contains no animal hormones and no gluten 😱

Well, the HHWT team recently had the opportunity of trying out Fatpapas’ Impossible menu. Having heard so much about it, we were really excited and curious to find out how it tastes like. After all, Impossible Foods come with a good cause – it aims to be sustainable in the long run and ease worldwide demand for beef. This is a cause that we can definitely get behind! 👍

Fatpapas is the first halal restaurant in Singapore to serve Impossible Foods and their menu has 4 items – The Impossible Cheese Burger ($18+), The Impossible Cottage Pie ($18+), The Impossible Meatball Spaghetti ($18+) and The Impossible Chilli Queso and Chips ($15.50+). We tried all 4 of them and here’s our review!
Since Fatpapas is known for being a burger joint, we’ll dive straight into the Impossible Cheese Burger first. For one, the patty looks and smells convincing – you’ll definitely mistake it for being a meat patty. When we first bit into the patty, we were pretty mindblown that it actually tasted like real meat!

The texture was also on point – it was pretty soft but one thing it lacked was the juiciness of real beef. Interestingly, some of us felt that it tasted more like lamb than beef! So, yes, it does taste like meat but you might not necessarily associate it with beef straight away. One interesting thing was that we also ordered the real meat burger afterwards and once we ate that, it made the contrast even more apparent 😂
Next, was the Impossible Cottage Pie which our team really loved! We felt that this, together with the Chilli Queso and Chips, tasted really convincing. But perhaps, this was due to the fact that both dishes used minced meat instead of chunks of meat, and so we couldn’t really taste the difference. The generous amount of potato and cheese paired really well with the meat – it was so good we ended up ordering another serving 😋
Then, it was time for the Impossible Meatball Spaghetti. What we noticed was that the minced “meat” didn’t really bind together in a way that a real meatball would – it was a little crumbly. Taste-wise, it didn’t feel like meat and some of us felt that it had more of an egg-y taste. But that’s not to say that it wasn’t delicious; we just couldn’t wrap our head around it. It’s not a favourite with our team but we’d still recommend you to try it as it’s really interesting!
Overall, Impossible Foods is a good initiative and for those of you who don’t eat meat on a regular basis, you won’t even be able to tell the difference! But for those who are huge fans of meat, perhaps this will trick your taste buds just a little bit 😅 The Impossible Burgers are also pricier than the other meat burgers at Fatpapas but we think it’s still worth the money as it’s an experience you have to try. And knowing that it’s a sustainable practice makes it better too! So, if you’ve been wanting to try meat-free burgers, head down to Fatpapas this weekend and feel the difference 😊
