You’ll probably be overwhelmed on your first visit because there are a lot of dishes on the menu. So we’re here to help you out with our pick of 10 dishes you must not miss:
1. Siu Mai With Chicken
We order siu mai in every dim sum eatery we visit and the ones at Islamic Centre Canteen are the best we’ve tasted! With every bite, the juicy goodness of the filling just oozes into your mouth. Trust us, it’s tough to stop at one basket.
#HHWT tip: If you love all things beef, you have to try the Siu Mai with beef too!
2. Xiao Long Pau (aka Steamed Buns Shanghai Style)
Xiao Long Pau is one of the most famous dim sum dishes in restaurants all over the world! Traditionally filled with pork, this one is stuffed with beef instead. Although the ones at Islamic Centre Canteen is not as juicy as we would have liked, who says no to halal Xiao Long Pau? 😛
3. Deep Fried Shrimp Wan Ton
Fried to perfection and oh so crispy. Okay we admit, we love fried dim sum dishes as much as the steamed ones!
4. Cheong Fun With Shrimp
Rice noodle rolls filled with shrimp and dipped in seasoned soy sauce. This is a traditional Cantonese favourite, especially for breakfast!
#HHWT tip: If you prefer beef, you can order the cheong fun with beef!
5. Lo Mai Gai
Unwrap the lotus leaf and you’ll find steamed glutinous rice with chicken! Another staple dim sum dish, this is one that you should share with your travel buddies unless you’re really, really hungry!
6. Steamed Chicken With Black Fungus
We were a little sceptical of this dish at first but were totally blown away when we tried it. The chicken is really tender and juicy and don’t forget to try the soup in the dish! It’s so flavourful, it’s almost like drinking chicken essence.
7. Deep Fried Dumplings With Shrimp And Chinese Chives
Another fried dim sum dish you shouldn’t miss! The shrimp and chives complement each other perfectly and it’s fried to a crisp. YUM.
8. Har Gow
Also known as steamed shrimp dumpling, the har gow is another popular dim sum dish and one of our favourites. Sink your teeth into the transclucent dumpling skin and savor the really juicy and succulent shrimp!
9. Steamed Seaweed Rolls With Seafood
We have no idea how seaweed rolls found their way to the dim sum family but these are really delicious and especially popular with kids!
10. Milk Tea
We’re completely addicted to Hong Kong-style milk tea. The texture of the drink is silky and we love the strong and distinctive tea fragrance! Definitely a drink you have to try when you’re in Hong Kong!
#HHWT tip: If you’re afraid that the tea fragrance may be too overwhelming for you, opt for the iced version instead!
