When Big Fish Small Fish was finally halal-certified in 2018, they caused a stir for their fast food-style take on fish and chips. Since then, their menu has expanded ‘Beyond Fish & Chips’ to include grilled fish and chicken, and even a Classic Fish & Chips that any fish and chips fan will love! ? Read on to find out how they’ve changed things up in their stores - as well as our review of their Classic Fish & Chips!

P.S. Read till the end to find out how you can win a free Halibut Fish & Chips for yourself! This giveaway has ended.

Their menu has gone beyond their signature Fish & Crisps, offering everything from Classic Fish & Chips to special Kids’ Meals that make dining out with your little ones a breeze! Their limited-time Chef’s Creation menu even includes poached and baked options. Don’t forget desserts like Churro Balls with Chocolate Dip ($5) so you can treat yourself to something sweet!

The must-try dish is their Classic Fish & Chips (from $10.80). Compared to their Fish & Crisps, it’s more similar to what you might get on the streets of London and Melbourne! You can choose between 6 different types of fish, but don’t worry if you’re unsure - the menu has a useful infographic describing the texture and taste. I recommend the classics of haddock, halibut, or sea bass!

P.S. Don’t forget to add on signature sauces including Cheese, XO (a seafood and shellfish-based sauce), Salted Egg, Curry Mayo, and Tartar Sauce. The Salted Egg and XO sauces are yummy if you want to add a locally-inspired twist, and the Tartar sauce is actually freshly-made in the store kitchen! Due to safe distancing measures they’ve temporarily removed the self-serve sauce station, but you can just request it from the staff and they’ll serve it to you along with your food. ?

The Classic Fish & Chips are served with a lemon wedge, homestyle Tartar Sauce, and 2 free sides. The haddock was lean and firm, yet fell apart smoothly once I dug in my utensils. The sweetness of the fish went really well with the sweet and tangy Tartar Sauce - and of course, you can drizzle lemon juice over the fillet if you like it a bit more sour. What really stood out was the batter - it was super crispy! ? The batter was golden-brown with a satisfying crunch and crispiness.

Their sides also recreate that authentic fish and chips experience - I was glad I could find Mushy Peas as they aren’t very common in Singapore despite being a traditional fish and chips side! The fries were also skin-on, leaving them crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. ?

Big Fish Small Fish started out serving to-go paper meal boxes out of a container park in Punggol - but now they have dine-in table service across 5 locations for a better dining experience! They’ve even introduced trays, plates, and metal utensils, giving it the feel of a laid back cafe rather than a fast-food kiosk. ? To ensure diners’ safety and convenience throughout the meal, you can place your order without leaving your table! Simply scan the QR code provided, and your food will be delivered right to your table. So you can just sit back, relax, and chit chat with your friends or family.

Overall, I was really impressed with how much Big Fish Small Fish has changed and improved their recipes since they first opened. They’ve definitely evolved from a fast food takeaway stand to serving delicious dishes beyond fish and chips, and even putting a local twist on Western favourites! Tell your friends and family it’s time to feast on fish and chips! ?
