Unlike other thick and creamy Chinese desserts like sesame paste, Cheng Tng's name literally means 'light soup' and has a much more refreshing taste. Many food court dessert stalls sell their own kinds of Cheng Tng, but if you're looking for a really traditional treat you should try out the Muslim-owned Ayman Alam Desserts at Serangoon Garden's Chomp Chomp Food Centre! ?
Run by Chinese Muslim revert Mr Fong, Ayman Alam Desserts uses a stunning 11 ingredients in their Cheng Tng! ? Each ingredient refreshes the body in a specific way - like Sterculia Seed which is meant to cool the throat, Peach Resin which is chock full of collagen, and Gingko to help boost your memory. The 'soup' itself isn't overly thick or sweet so you can really taste each individual ingredient on its own. The crunchy Winter Melon slices and barley grains were my favourite! ?
Best of all, these generously loaded bowls are $5 or less! ? You can get a hot or cold version, and prices range from $4-$5. The $5 Large bowl is worth it if you're really dying from the heat or sharing it with a friend - it's bigger than your hand, and will leave you feeling refreshed by the time you get to the bottom of the bowl. ?
