Explore South Australia (Including Adelaide!) With This 4D3N Muslim-Friendly Itinerary

There is so much to see and do in Adelaide – from internationally-renowned events to exquisite culinary delights, and beautiful parks to thought-provoking galleries and museums ? There's an experience for everyone! We took a trip to Adelaide in November 2022 and this 4D3N Muslim-friendly itinerary in Adelaide will include all the activities we did and loved! ?

Pre-trip information

  • We took a direct flight from Singapore to Adelaide and it was a seven-hour flight!
  • To ensure we could spend our first day to the fullest, we boarded a red-eye flight and landed in Adelaide in the early morning ?

Entry requirements

  • There are no Covid pre-arrival requirements to enter Australia but do be sure to receive your Australia Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) visa prior to your trip!

WiFi

  • As we explored Adelaide for four days, we used TuneTalk’s SIM card, which provides data up to 4GB for seven days. 
  • It was more than enough for navigation and all our photos and IG stories! ?

Where to stay in Adelaide

  • You can opt for any hotel in Adelaide CBD as the area is conveniently located within the public transportation system, shopping centres, museums, parks and many Muslim-friendly eateries. 
  • We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Adelaide during our trip and it was close to all the amenities mentioned above. 
  • As for breakfast, bacon was cooked separately and was not served on the buffet line. You can still enjoy cereal, yoghurt, pastries, bread and jams.
  • We were able to takeout breakfast on days we had an early morning, so do request this if you need to leave before their breakfast starts.

Getting around in Adelaide

  • Travelling around in Adelaide is super easy as their public transportation system is well-connected. 
  • If you plan on taking public transportation during your trip in Adelaide, we recommend getting the Adelaide metroCARD. It’s a rechargeable card that you simply tap on the validator machine onboard buses and trams.

Car rental

  • It’s also easy to drive in Adelaide as they drive on the left side, just like us! We recommend renting a car through Klook, where you can choose the type of car, and where to pick it up and drop it off. 
  • Planning to drive with small kids in tow? No problem! You can add car seats for infants and toddlers as well as booster seats for older kids.

  • Just show the booking voucher to the car rental company and you’re good to go!
  • You can use your home driving license in Australia and do remember to have an English translation if your license is not in English.

Day 1: Adelaide CBD

Lunch at Adelaide Central Market

  • After checking into your hotel, it’s time for lunch! What’s a better way to check out the local culture than the Adelaide Central Market? 
  • Only about a 10-minute walk from any hotel in Adelaide CBD, the Central Market is a treat for the senses. 

  • The market offers a huge range of fresh food including fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, seafood, cheeses, bakery, smallgoods and healthy foods. 

  • We recommend having lunch at Let Them Eat, a popular vegan restaurant chain in Adelaide.
  • The healthy and tasty food here is a welcoming sight after spending hours on the plane!

Halal status: Vegan food and no alcohol is used in the cooking.

Visit MOD., a museum of discovery

  • MOD. is a futuristic museum of discovery where you can be inspired by ideas at the intersection of science, art, and innovation.
  • We loved that the museum is interactive and you can learn how research shapes our understanding of the world around us to inform our futures.

  • Be sure to check out the Mirror Ritual exhibition. It’s an interactive exhibition where it explored algorithms through our reflection in the mirror and how algorithms can read our feelings. It was quite mind-boggling how technology has advanced!

Note: At the time of writing, the museum is temporarily closed for installation work. Be sure to check it out when it reopens on the 17th of January!

Rundle Mall

  • Yay, shopping! Rundle Mall is a popular pedestrian shopping street in Adelaide and it’s the longest and one of the busiest malls in Australia with more than 700 retail stores!

  • Be sure to stop and pose for a photo with the famous Rundle Mall Pigs — we loved the one digging through the “trash” ?

Adelaide Arcade

  • While you’re in the area, be sure to window shop at Adelaide Arcade, a stunning shopping centre that opened in 1885.
  • Take in the distinctive domes, ornate details, and architectural grandeur ?
  • The heritage-listed building offers a unique retail experience where quality and personalised service is second nature.

  • Discover luxury brands, specialist services, and premium products from local retailers and artisan vendors.

  • Experience a stargazer’s delight perched on top of the tallest Murray River clifftops in Australia.

  • Discover this 130 million-year-old natural playground known as one of the darkest places on earth.

Day 2: Cleland Wildlife Park and Adelaide Botanic Garden

Meet South Australia’s iconic wildlife at Cleland Wildlife Park

  • Spend a day at Cleland Wildlife Park and interact with some of South Australia’s most iconic wildlife!

  • Get a chance to see over 130 species of various kinds of animals including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, and more ?
  • No driving to the park is needed! Get your ticket for the Cleland Wildlife Park self-guided tour and be picked up and dropped off straight from your hotel for a safe and hassle-free trip!
  • During our trip, it was rainy and cold (brrr ?️). It was cold & rainy during the trip, but those who didn't have their rain jackets didn't have to worry, since the driver offered one; Now that's good customer service!

  • Enjoy a scenic drive to the park and marvel at the beauty of Adelaide Hills and Mount Lofty.
  • As for lunch, you can enjoy a vegetarian lunch at the cafe but we highly recommend you pack your own lunch and enjoy it at one of the park’s picnic tables ? If you're lucky, maybe a kangaroo might join you too!

Halal status: The cafe serves vegetarian food such as Margherita pizza but serves ham sandwiches too so we recommend you dine at your own discretion.

Smell the roses at Adelaide Botanic Garden

  • Adelaide Botanic Garden is an oasis in the cosmopolitan heart of the city, featuring beautifully-landscaped gardens, majestic avenues and stunning architecture.
  • Spanning 50 hectares, the historic garden (opened in 1857) features some of Australia's finest plant collections.

  • Some of the must-visit attractions include the Amazon Waterlily Pavilion, the Bicentennial Conservatory and the Rose Garden ?

  • Be sure to pose for a photo under the huge tropical leaves at the Bicentennial Conservatory and smell the roses at the Rose Garden.
  • Fun fact: the Rose Garden is also a test garden where they grow unique species of roses that are not available in the market! The smell is heavenly here ?

Have Indonesian dinner at Pondok Daun Restaurant

  • There’s nothing better than enjoying a plate of warm rice after spending a day outdoors!
  • Enjoy authentic Indonesian food at Pondok Daun Restaurant — it’s comfort food for sure!
  • Some of the must-tries include beef rendang, grilled oxtail, chicken curry and grilled chicken rice.

Day 3: Kangaroo Island

  • Time to wake up early and head to Kangaroo Island for some fun in the sun!
  • Psst… Remember to ask your hotel to pack your breakfast as the tour sets off at 6.30am!
  • We suggest booking the Kangaroo Island tour on Klook as it makes the whole journey easy breezy — you don’t have to worry about catching the ferry or driving around the island as you’ll have a tour guide to bring you around!
  • The tour also includes entrance tickets to the Seal Bay Conservation Park and the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park.
  • You’ll also enjoy a two-course lunch at Vivonne Bay Bistro (and yes, they can serve vegetarian lunch for you!). No alcohol is used in cooking.
  • You’re also welcome to pack your own lunch and enjoy it in the bistro.

  • Pick-up is from Adelaide Bus Station where it’ll take about two hours to reach Cape Jervis. From here, you’ll take the ferry to Kangaroo Island. The journey takes about 45 minutes so you can relax and enjoy the ride.
  • The ferry ride ticket is included in the tour price, so you don’t have to worry about anything!
  • Do note that you’ll arrive back in Adelaide around 10pm and there is no dinner included in the tour. We highly recommend you pack your dinner as well, which you can enjoy during the ferry ride.

See cute seals at the Seal Bay Conservation Park

  • No trip to Kangaroo Island is complete without a visit to Seal Bay!
  • Seal Bay has been home to an Aus­tralian sea lion pop­u­la­tion for thou­sands of years, and offers one of the most excep­tion­al nature-based expe­ri­ences in the world ?

  • There are no enclo­sures or cages at Seal Bay. Instead, you will be tak­en into the heart of the colony where an expe­ri­enced guide will share more about these endan­gered ani­mals. 
  • For those in wheelchairs or strollers, there is a boardwalk which mean­ders through the dunes to a num­ber of view­ing platforms. You can enjoy a self-guided tour here.
  • The Kangaroo Island tour on Klook includes a tour guide ticket to the Seal Bay Conservation Park so you can learn more about these cute seals!

Witness the Remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase National Park

  • Perched above the sea in Flinders Chase National Park, the impressive Remarkable Rocks form a cluster of precariously balanced granite boulders.
  • This stunning work of nature has been shaped by the erosive forces of wind, sea spray and rain over some 500 million years! 
  • These flat rocks are easy and safe to walk on during dry weather, but special caution should be taken when weather conditions become wet or windy. 
  • Be careful when exploring the rocks and don’t go near the edge, especially during windy and rainy days!
  • Remember to wear your most comfortable shoes with rubber soles!

Admire the beautiful Admirals Arch 

  • Admirals Arch is a natural rock arch created by amazing forces of nature ?
  • You can take an easy walk on a boardwalk around the cliff face which it’ll lead you to a viewing platform overlooking the arch. The arch is sculpted by weathering and erosion from the sea over thousands of years.

  • The view from the boardwalk is breathtaking, so be sure to stop for a photo!
  • Do keep a lookout for fur seals as they often play among the rocks especially near the rock pools beneath the arch!

Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park

  • Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park is one of Kangaroo Island’s best attractions. With over 150 species of Native Australian wildlife and over 600 animals, they have all the experiences you could wish for!
  • From cuddly koalas, slithery snakes, adorable penguins, and bouncy roos, the park has a wide and exciting range of animals for every age to enjoy.
  • The kangaroos here are more friendly than the ones in Cleland Wildlife Park so if you didn’t have a chance to pet the roos in Adelaide, be sure to catch your chance here! 

  • There’s also a cuddle a koala experience (AUD40/person), you can get up close and personal with marmosets, tiny cheeky monkeys, where you can feed them (AUD85/person) or meet a meerkat (AUD85/person).

Day 4: Swim with dolphins and strawberry picking

  • What’s a trip to South Australia without getting in the water, right?
  • Get up close and personal with dolphins — you can even swim with them!
  • Book the Temptation Dolphin Cruise on Klook to enjoy this awesome activity with the whole family!
  • You can enjoy watching the dolphins swimming around the boat so be sure to bring your camera.
  • Be sure to pack a hat, sunscreen, drinks and snacks!

  • Pack your swimsuit and jump on a tram from Adelaide and in just 20 minutes you’ll be sprawled out on a towel soaking in the sun at Adelaide’s favourite city beach, Glenelg. 
  • Walk along the foreshore, grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants dotting Jetty Road and check out the boutique shops. 
  • There is plenty to keep the whole family amused such as; fishing charters, sailing, walking trails, playgrounds, and an amusement centre. 

Pick strawberries at the Beerenberg Family Farm

  • Spend the perfect afternoon picking strawberries at the Beerenberg Family Farm
  • There’s nothing quite like the taste of freshly picked strawberries! Juicy, ripe, and packed with sweetness and flavour, the strawberries here are nothing like any you’ve tasted before ?

  • It’s truly the perfect day out for family and friends to enjoy! Breathe in the fresh air of the patch and hunt for that perfect strawberry ?
  • Do note that strawberry picking is available from November to April every year.

  • Do stop by their Farm Shop and bring home your favourite Beerenberg products! There are unique, Farm Shop specials that are not available back home such as Blueberry and Yuzu jam, Strawberry and Rose jam, Caramelised Onion Chutney and many more!

  • The  Farm Cafe is the perfect spot for breakfast, lunch, or afternoon tea. We recommend trying their waffles and ice cream as it’s prepared separately from their main kitchen (to avoid cross-contamination as they serve pork).

Halal status: The cafe serves pork and alcohol but the waffle and ice cream section is Muslim-friendly and food is prepared separately.
